Is it better to not know?

Lake effect snow bands are somewhat unpredictable for their duration, intensity & location and give nice fluffy powder.
Letitlakeeffect.

Cliches exist for a reason.

One of my favorites: "Ignorance is bliss".

If I worry about minute details (excepting issues of safety) I just don't ski as much as I could.

I kinda like how unpredictable the weather can be even with all the high tech weather info and analytics. They didn't predict our biggest snowstorm ever last December. We happened to be dead center of an intense bullseye. I wish I would've stayed awake to witness it. I went to sleep at midnight, about 2ft on the ground, woke up at 4am to nearly 4ft. I wonder what 6" per hour looks like. 3" per hour is pretty intense.

Knowing what is happening and sharing that information is in our DNA. Knowing things and being social with that information used to be life and death. Those that lived, passed on that tendency.

I read a lot less news than I used to, but a lot more than I probably should. Whenever I start scrolling, I like to ask myself how many headlines and stories personally impact me, my life, and my choices. Usually, none.

I wouldn't trade knowing where the best conditions are for the world. I have certainly had amazing days that out performed forecasts/expectations and I would not have known if I didn't go. I've also had under performing days that sucked.

But, I cannot even begin to count how many amazing days happened because I gathered information online and put the pieces together on when and where to go. The best approach is knowing AND controlling expectations.

The local Haudenosaunee just told stories.

Agree with Harvey & Ripitz, however my schedule is not that flexible so have to book trips in advance, sometimes you get lucky, sometime you get skunked.
Most recent bonus was a few years ago when we planned months in advance to meet up with my daughter and her friends in the Mad River Valley...

Sweet video. I planned a trip to MRG for a group of friends years ago, didn't realize it was valentines day, the girlfriend (now wife) wasn't happy. They all went, I stayed back, 20yrs later still haven't made it there! One day....

Great post MC and replies.

You and I are about the same age. My kids will probably never know what it is like to truly be out of touch. We were driving home on the Cross Bronx (dah dah dah) from Belleayre opening weekend when my phone died. My seven year old seriously (and understandably given her life experience) asked me if we would make it home ok, which is like 15 miles on a straight line.

Fun exercise - next time you don't know the answer to something that you want to know, pick an amount of time and DON'T google it. It is not easy to resist. If you happen to have a set of encyclopedias, fine look it up on paper (I don't).

Our generation and older has some responsibility to make the point you do above, and to the extent we care enough and have close enough relationships, do something about it in our own communities, families, etc.

Happy Skiing.
