I used to book a level 9 lesson at JH..only 1 or 2 people would show up..so..private guide for the day for the price of a group lesson. tip him 100.00 and there ya go.
Yeah, I’ve done the same a few places. Did it at Whiteface, ended up one on one, after that we booked Bill for a number of family privates. Trip to Snowbird this year worked out great. Lodging and lift package included a group lesson, ended up with their $200+ mountain experience guided skiing. Others in the group, but it was great to cut lines on an 18 inch powder day.
Best one was at Squaw. Lift ticket alone was like $150. Lift ticket plus full day group lesson was about $200. Storm chasing (which is a bad idea at Squaw), so everything was closed except the K-T chair. Not a bad chair to be stuck on all day, btw. So, expert lesson, other than me one girl shows up, it’s her second year skiing, she thinks she needs an expert lesson at Squaw...
. Anywho, we take a run and in short order the instructor is radioing down that they are going to need another instructor to split us up. Turns out there was a Tahoe local, who is one of their North Face Mountain Guides, kid competed skier-cross for Canada in the Vancouver Olympics....anyway, he was about to leave because his client didn’t show up that day. So, with essentially one lift available, lines out the wazoo, I get to cut lines and tear up the place with a local/Olympian, all for a super cheap group lesson rate....plus I bought him lunch, beers, and gave him a very nice tip. Skied stuff I never would’ve found on my own, hit the Fingers with him....great day. Beers with him at the Chamois, telling his buddies he’d never seen anyone billy-goat the Fingers as well as I did (not really a compliment, I know), was pretty cool.
Expert lessons work well sometimes. Always worth checking a resorts ski school page for deals!
