Datacenters or not?The curtailment was probably called because today's load is more than a gigawatt above forecast. That leaves them scrambling to find supply that can ramp up quickly. There is a notice of curtailment tomorrow as well, which may or may not actually happen.
The curtailment doesn't start until 3pm and lasts for 6 hours, but they're only obligated to reduce load for 4 of the 6 hours, so I'm not sure why they need to close at2. Maybe they got burned during curtailments last year because they stayed open almost until the curtailment started.
From the NYISO website:
Special Case Resources and Emergency Demand Response Program resources are needed today, January 25, 2026, starting at 15:00 and ending at 22:00. Resources located in Load Zones A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K are subject to this notice.

That's not clean natural gas anymore. The NY companies all switched to fracked fossil gas the same year DeBlasio was elected mayor.Whatabout bitcoin mine$?
There’s a natty gas power plant that juices the servers on Seneca Lake.
Was it because it was cloudy when it was snowing & Gore's touted solar panels couldn’t keep up with juice demands? Gore pays more for their juice than the other ski3 bumps. The curtailment thing is confusing as it seems to only impact ORDA and in a very significant way. In Gore's case specifically, the mountain takes longer to clear due to having so many dead ends, so they ended up shutting stuff down before 2. Whiteface likely switched the gondola to diesel to run it until 3:30.
Killington has curtailments too, but they only affect snowmaking and not the lifts. They mostly happen between 5pm and 9pm, on very cold nights.
It’s not confusing. The other NY mountains have either figured out how to curtail without closing early or more likely they didn’t agree to participate in the curtailment program in the first place. Those programs weren’t designed with ski areas in mind and there’s a few ways ski areas could get burned and closing early on the best day of the season is just one of them. The curtailment thing is confusing as it seems to only impact ORDA and in a very significant way.
