The curtailment doesn't start until 3pm and lasts for 6 hours, but they're only obligated to reduce load for 4 of the 6 hours, so I'm not sure why they need to close at2. Maybe they got burned during curtailments last year because they stayed open almost until the curtailment started.

Datacenters or not?
 
Just a heads up for those of us skiing Gore tomorrow. They groomed Sagamore but not edge to edge. Skiers right has an ice rubble shelf that will not be visible with this snow if they don't do something about it tonight Please be careful
 
Gore shut down lifts a 130 today on the upper mountain and 145 everywhere else. Whiteface ran all the lifts until 245 and the gondola until 330. The Belleayre website they would close "around 3." Why so early, especially at Gore, on probably the best day of the year? The 6 hour curtailment began at 3pm but they only need to curtail for 4 of the 6 hours. If they shut everything at 5 they still meet their obligation.
The bigger question is why are they curtailing at all. As far as I can tell, none of the other NY ski areas closed early. I don't know if that was because they met their requirement without closing early, or because they don't participate in those programs. It's completely predictable that curtailments will be called only on cold days, and on cold snowing days. ORDA
saves some money in those programs but at the cost of giving up some of the best hours of skiing and/or possibly critical snowmaking hours. For what?

The curtailment thing is confusing as it seems to only impact ORDA and in a very significant way. In Gore's case specifically, the mountain takes longer to clear due to having so many dead ends, so they ended up shutting stuff down before 2. Whiteface likely switched the gondola to diesel to run it until 3:30.

Killington has curtailments too, but they only affect snowmaking and not the lifts. They mostly happen between 5pm and 9pm, on very cold nights.

Was it because it was cloudy when it was snowing & Gore's touted solar panels couldn’t keep up with juice demands? Gore pays more for their juice than the other ski3 bumps.

It’s not confusing. The other NY mountains have either figured out how to curtail without closing early or more likely they didn’t agree to participate in the curtailment program in the first place. Those programs weren’t designed with ski areas in mind and there’s a few ways ski areas could get burned and closing early on the best day of the season is just one of them.
Also the gondola was rolling coal all afternoon. What’s that about? Maybe they need a consultant for a maintenance plan.
