Going Under the Knife

Well, hospital visiting is a lot easier now that BT is in our home town. And, as a bonus, quite by accident we learned that family pets are allowed to visit at the Huntsville hospital, with care team approval. We got approval and Moira went for her first hospital visit and gave some dawg love to Jenny. And of course, Moira was loved by all she encountered.

She will get first physio on Monday, which will determine how long she needs to stay there. Likely out by the end of next week. Then the real fun begins.

So... this week, I learned that I'm a candidate to have BOTH knees replaced. X-rays are pretty dang bleak; both are bone on bone. Not surprising: I've gotten gel injections for many years and I have a custom brace for one knee.

At the moment, I'm thinking, git 'er done and do both at once instead of missing the better part of 2 years rehabbing one at a time. The clock is ticking after all. Big problem, I live alone and I don't know how I'm gonna do this.

Any thoughts on doing both vs one at a time would be appreciated.
Peter, I'm a physical therapist with 30+ years of experience plus my wife has had two TKR. I'd be happy to talk to you about your upcoming surgery to prepare you for successful outcomes. I live in the capital district if you want to get together for discussion. in the meantime, got SkiTalk rehab forum and read the total knee stuff.

As of tomorrow, BT won't be in the hospital.

We were expecting that she would be released on Thursday but got word this morning that she will be released tomorrow. That's my birthday present!

She had physio sessions yesterday and today. The PT took a closer look at her x-rays and determined that she had more broken ribs than originally diagnosed. Both sides on the back, total of 11 cracked ribs, all "greenstick fractures" and not fully snapped. On top of that, a cracked sternum. Holy smokes. We assume that the team at St. Mike's was more focussed on diagnosing spinal fractures. No change in that diagnosis. Out of the blue, she had her third CT scan today, just checking for anything else, we suppose.

Anyway, I have the house prepped as best I can for the moment, and will pick her up at 10 am tomorrow. We will be supplied with some mobility aids and have a walker here that didn't make it to Cuba yet. The aftercare team called today, there will be calls and visits from PT, OT and nurses from time to time. Never a dull moment!

Just to compare US and Hinterlandian health care costs, I just got a bill from our local health care unit for $45. For "ambulance." That's all it says. She's had three ambulance rides so far, so I assume it is some kind of deductible for the transfer to the big city hospital. Seems reasonable. Other than that, all covered.

Ugh when it rains it pours just went into remission for cancer my cardiologist took me off a drug that was particularly tough that held my AFIb in check for over 2 yrs because it wasn't stopping it in his opinion I just wasn't feeling it .

Well I ve been in ER for 6 hrs today feeling it .they've brought it down hopefully will go home soon after a battery of tests ,Cat Scan with dye injected to look at the Aorta it came back ok now more drugs ugh

Now will be knocked off golf course for awhile getting old sux sometimes

Just got word on the results from the dye injected CAT scan the aorta was fine BUT

Here's where it gets weird they found a small 2.6 cm aneurysm in the inguinal nerve in my groin.

12 years ago I had taken a wicked Biff at speed at Tremblant after hitting some "death cookies "

It was the worst fall of my skiing career flying through the air and landing hard on my groin

So I went to my primary doc 12 years ago , had him check me for a hernia and it was negative, so I then went to PT and they told me it was a very bad stretch of my iliosoas tendon in the groin

I have been doing stretches for this for 12 years and sometimes it gets mildly better but it's been difficult for me to bend over on that side to put on socks or to pick up a golf ball.

So all the time the culprit was this aneurysm. At 2.6 cm it's not a candidate for surgery yet and since I've had it for 12 years I'm not sure where we're going to be with it .

so my doctors will do ultrasounds every 6 months to continue to check this out so it doesn't get to the point (3.5 cm) where surgery may be required

When it rains it pours I guess oh well I've lived for 12 years with it so you got to stay positive and be thankful for the health that you do have.

It's on the right side so it's obviously going to stretch every time I take a golf swing which is bothersome
