Snow's back... day and night.

Sugar Mountain in NC opened up at 9:00 this morning with top-to-bottom coverage that was deeper than usual at the base. Temps in the 20s over the weekend and continuing most of the day today. Not exactly a lift line at opening but I've already seen several people ski down in the last five minutes.

Cataloochee near Asheville will be open as soon as they get the grooming finished. Only from mid-station though. Cat is on the Indy Pass.

Both Sugar and Cat have been in continuous operation for over 50 years based on 100% snowmaking coverage.

Turns out the reason Cat opened a little later is that they were grooming to the top. The website wasn't updated until about 10:30am, although the lifts may have opened around 10:00.

Sugar is much more aware of social media than Cat. It's a "destination resort" for folks who live in NC, SC, TN, and GA. Also some families who make the drive from FL during school holidays. Sugar has slopeside lodging near the summit. None of the other NC ski areas have slopeside lodging, although there are ski out/walk in cabins/houses near Beech slopes.

Per usual, SkiSoutheast knew what was going to happen at Sugar and Cat. Their office is in the NC mountains. Unofficial only saw Sugar's social media posts.

Here's the list of opening dates before Thanksgiving week for Epic locations as of Nov. 14. It feels more like the decision about when to start snowmaking and when to open is more of a local decision than in the past few years. There have been several early openings in Tahoe after the big storm dumped 1-3 feet. Other destination resorts have also opened earlier than originally announced. Snowbird went from Nov. 30 to Nov. 18 while Solitude opened a week early on Nov. 11

Mt. Snow was listed as opening on Nov. 11 back in August and still hasn't picked a public target date yet. The delay in opening was announced on Nov. 9. On the website, still says "Opening Day - coming soon" as of Nov. 15. That's pretty much what the Killington website says too. Killington typically doesn't announced opening day until much closer to the date.

*Oct 28: Keystone, CO - snowmaking started by 10Oct
*Nov 9: Breckenridge, CO - earlier by two days
*Nov 11: Vail, CA
*Nov 12: Big Bear Mountain Resorts, CA
*Nov 12: Northstar, CA - a week early, announced 11Nov
*Nov 12: Heavenly, CA - a week early, announced 11Nov
*Nov 12: Kirkwood, CA
*Nov 16: Park City, UT - was 18Nov, announced 12Nov
*Nov 18: Hunter, NY
*Nov 18: Stowe, VT
*Nov 18: Wildcat, NH
*Nov 19: Okemo, VT
