Dark Side Liftline Photos

Milo you are doc doom.

I'm thinking it means gravel.

lol, I know. I'm too pessimistic for my own good.

The reason I'm so upset about this is that Darkside was the best place Gore, and one of the best spots anywhere in NY or soothern Vermont. Even the nice quiet spot on Cloud with the best views of the High Peaks is gone. "Remediation" just adds another not very steep groomer. What remains of the old glade is only the part that was too tight for me.

The other part of it is that I once worked at an agency that permitted pipelines and power lines. If the electric company wanted to widen the Gore power line and raise the pylons for more capacity, they would have needed approval from 3 or 4 state and federal agencies, and maybe the APA too. That would mean multiple public meetings and evidentiary hearings. It could take a year or more. And there's no way they would be allowed to dynamite those little rocky drops in the right of way. ORDA destroyed Darkside, which to my knowledge is the only ski trail in North America that anyone bothered to put a sign up to remember someone's love for the spot.

The reason I don't drop it is because, among other mistakes, the UMP includes straightening lower Steilhang and cutting a new blue groomer through Straightbrook glade, and clearing much of the area where Tahawus and Sleeping Bear are close. I've never met a skier who wants any of that. It's clear ORDA doesn't anything about running a ski area. ORDA should hear that.

Well said. I could rant for quite a while but you’re doing a good job. Gore is losing its identity which it can never get back. It is being homogenized.

Once you homogenize it is hard to go back. If Gore is listening, please help!
This is how most government agencies operate though, they take the edge off of things (except military R&D).
Imagine if this was a park down state. Would the public accept dynamiting a trail down a ridge

Those potential changes are pretty freaky.

NYskiblog seems like a good medium to prevent this from happening

That's why I'm keeping after this. I'm hoping that a critical mass of Gore skiers from here (and other places) speak up so that ORDA hears. I was encouraged that Harvey reported that some remediation was planned for Darkside, because maybe it means ORDA is listening. It's too late for Darkside, but maybe other parts of the UMP will be reconsidered.

Not that one more post piling on is going to make a difference, but I was at Gore yesterday and saw the devastation first hand. What a tragedy, they absolutely destroyed the most iconic section of the mountain. And for what, to get more beginner and intermediate skiers on a widened Cloud?

As a consolation prize they did cut down the brush on the the Top Ridge Glades Adeventure trail which they haven't done in years. So if we get some snow maybe that will actually be open more than 1 or 2 days this year.

Alright, I'll try to be a bit optimistic. We had to cut down a couple of tall white pines in our backyard this summer that were too close to the house. When I came home after work I almost cried and felt we made a huge mistake and ruined the look of our yard. Had a similar feeling on the lift yesterday. It's not quite the same as the trees in our yard had to come down, but it was still hard. We did get used to the new look of yard though and it opened it up for new activities, so hoping the same will happen for Darkside. I definitely agree though and don't want to see Gore become just another Mt. Snow.
