Cuomo says ski areas in NY to open at 50% Capacity

Thanks for this. I spoke to an ORDA representative about this yesterday, specifically about capacity. The response was "we don't know what is up until we hear from the governor's office." So there it is.

They question is, what does this mean for passholders? And how will capacity be determined? I'd doubt Gore is at 75% on too many days. But it is also terrain based, so...

Yeah, most of these capacity caps sound like bs to me. It seems like a lot of effort to actually enforce with an outcome that knowingly is going to make less money.

whatever. I’m over it.

The article's first paragraph states that the reduction is 50% capacity for indoor areas. That is going to be hard to enforce on a cold day.

Are they going to tell cold skiers to queue up outside, physically distanced, and wait to come into the lodge to warm up? I've never seen a ski area enforce lodge capacity. But I've been in numerous lodges that were absolutely over capacity, usually due to cold weather.

Pressure on indoor capacity may depend more on the weather than the number of tickets sold or pass holders allowed. Ski areas may need to decide to shut down during extreme frostbite warnings (even if it is a weekend or a powder day).

Jay Peak is encouraging people to "use your car as your base lodge." Makes sense but many people, including me, will loath that concept. A key part of my lift-served experience is trudging to the lodge, having a coffee, putting my boots, checking the vibe and heading out. You can't do that from your car. Not that I'm likely to visit Jay this winter with the border closure.
