Building a House with Wood

Hence I put it in quotes.

How about: "some kind of metal attachments that are connected with screws or nails, kind of like joist hangers, but not officially called joist hangers."

I like extending the roof to protect the windows from much of the rain. Maybe gives the wind more leverage?

I wasn't asking if it was required, just did something like that exist.

Hurricane Straps I believe

Here you go:

I don't know if they are required in NY.

I don't think overhangs have much to do with roofs lifting off. It's more about pressure difference between inside and outside cause by wind lifting from the outside and pushing through broken windows from below. IT doesn't seem very common around here, but in hurricane country it happens a lot.

When we raised the roof on the back half of the old house we installed hurricane clips.
Had a tornado come thru when we were doing it and the next door neighbor's roof went off.
Walls on the new part we were building didn’t even get racked, but we lost trees&branches and had some other relatively minor damage.

Fact

We are going with Anderson 400 series. Are they good?

Another question. Is there such a thing as "joist hangers" for the roof that will help the roof stay attached to the house in a big wind?
I have Andersen 400’s in my house (built 23 years ago). Very happy with them.

Hurricane ties are required to keep either the rafters or trusses from uplifting during high winds.

We are high on a ridge, it could be prudent?

Any lightning protection planned? I’m lowland high up and It likes my Stainless Steel flue . 2x so far but it’s grounded very well.
Also it almost caught me on my lawn tractor. I like to think that I pay attention to weather and saw the storm coming but took one more pass with the tractor. I had a 10mph wind at my back and in an instant it changed 180° . I dove for the ground and before I could barely get a foot , a bolt went over my head into the woods 100’ in front of me .

This is your decision tree:

They're cheap, but if other houses don't have problems without them, don't bother.

OR

They're cheap, but 500 year weather events seem to happen every 10 years now.

The choice is yours. Also, they're only cheap if they are in the original contract requirements. Everything you add after the contract is signed is expensive.

Contract ha.

It looks to me like you could add those in a few hours, and the parts couldn't cost that much.
