Building a House with Wood

Is it normal to overbuild your floors if you know you're gonna be partying?

We don't often host parties. With this floor we'd need to up our game?

Lol , Most floors are 2x10 . The span to the beam is only 12’?
2x12’s are heavy duty for sure . Looking at the plan a second time there’s blocking over the beam so I guess that’s why there’s not a need for bridging.
I’m not an engineer but have framed a couple houses.

First floor is 2x10, second floor is 2x12. Not sure why.

Spans are 12 and 15 feet. (Not divided evenly).

There is bridging called for at "mid span."

So what is the "catting" for?

Rule of thumb I learned for spans is 2x10 , actual lumber dimension (1.625”x 9.25” =15.03’ ) 2x10 would be fine for the second floor.
I guess you have some heavy furniture?
I’m curious why you’re architect would choose 12’s . Making room for mechanicals?

Maybe because one span is 15 feet? (The load bearing wall is not in the center of the building.)

I think it's actually the engineer who picks the lumber sizes/config?

First floor is half on.
framing

I really wish I could have been at the cabin the last 5 or 6 days, to watch this happen.

The crew built the walls and gables on the ground, last week.

Today the crane came and dropped the parts into place.

omg

That manufactured timber for the ridge beam is something else.

Imagine trying to publish a blog (or do anything) while this is going on, and you are getting txts like this.
