Yup. Fresh legs, hustle & great defense. "The resilience of this underdog squad with a shoestring budget dates back to the stretch of 27 days in December and January when the Omicron variant ravaged Saint Peter’s and left them unable to play a single game.
That break was the longest Covid layoff among NCAA tournament teams, according to Stats LLC, and it turned out to be long enough for Holloway to reinvent his team.
What began as stopgaps for a team reeling from a Covid outbreak became the foundations of their unlikely success. Saint Peter’s was 3-6 before the break—including a loss to one of the worst Division-I teams—and they’re 18-5 since with upset wins over Kentucky and Murray State.(&Purdue) Their statistical improvement from the first half of the season to the post-Covid half was the greatest of any team in the NCAA tournament."
Which will be my team, UNC-Chapel Hill aka Carolina. Roy Williams was there to cheer on the new coach, Hubert Davis. I remember watching him when Hubert was a player for Dean Smith. I watched his uncle, Walter Davis, play in person when I was in college at Carolina.
I’m not a big basketball fan, but you gotta watch during the Tournament, right? Saint Pater’s has been fun to watch. Amazing how they are able to take these big programs completely off their games with their high press and shifting defense, and then clutch offense. I hope they keep the run going.
Pete's is the real deal . We played in the same league when i was an undergrad , they have been competitive for years . We were 18-2 when we played them and the ate our lunch .
But THIS squad is SPECIAL , tenacious swarming D , they MAKE foul shots , but their two most important characteristics are : 1 . They CONTROL the tempo , 2 they have BALANCED scoring and THAT D ...man that D and boxing out and controling the passing lanes is phenominal
Frankly imho this IS the BEST spors story in years and comes at a time when we all need something to get excited about with all the negativity and turmoil in the world and our nation
This run is movie worthy .....think think the old flick "Hoosiers"
