Black Fly Season

The ancient wisdom handed down says traditional season is ~ Mother’s Day to Father’s Day. But can vary based on early warmth or a late frost.

Basically some kind of bugs from May 10 through sometime in August really.

It's way better in town, up at our place they are insane.

Screened in porch.

So can you outrun the black flies?
When I moved to Saratoga, I thought I'd be hiking and mountain biking in the Spring. Uh, no. But, road biking was ok. As long as you kept moving, of course, but, even stopped, you were out on a road, not stuck in the wet woods. So I road biked a ton. August was a little tough, because these evil little green bastards would land on you, even if moving on the road, and take a piece of you when you least expect it. Somebody at work theorized that they were horse flies, imported in with all the horses for the track meet in July/August, and a lot of them were stabled up in my biking area above the lake.

Streams generally have to reach 36 to 40 degrees before the larvae hatch, the warmer the more. There have been a few around during the previous warm spell but in general the first hatches are not that aggressive. Once you live here they are a nuisance but I would take a black fly over a mosquito or deer fly any day!

Tell all!
Well..thinking of retiring early and moving near Stowe. Have to keep a place in CT so my wife can still work and go to the office in Westchester when that time comes back. I have a condo in Stowe that eventually we will sell and get a house..tired of working in NYC..the commute is getting worse every day. took me 3 hours on Monday to get back.

Commuting is the worst. It's always been a goal of mine to live close to work and I have been lucky to pull it off for my entire career. Good luck man.

Between commuting and getting to Stowe or wherever on weekends it like 1100 miles of driving a week.
