Bearpen Conditions

wondering if anyone has a current steer on bearpen? called bearpen sports mlk weekend and they mentioned xcountry was closed and that the mountain looked thin. That was before Sunday/Monday snow. Anyone skinned up recently? And anyone have any maps to share? Looking at potential for this coming Friday/Sat

I use NY/NJ Trail Conference paper maps and their digital “Combined” map available through Avenza. I also run Strava or AllTrails and sometimes both simultaneously and leave the phone on airplane. More info on Caltopo like slope and shade time layers as well as cell phone coverage by carrier.

@APphysics might be able to share recent snow depth observations from around that area. My guess is plenty up high and sharkey down low.

@Ripitz nailed it in a nut shell. the details below:

I was on one of its close neighbors with a very slightly more eastern aspect on monday the 20th. we had good skiable snow until around 2700’. we were in skis from car to summit and back. it’s blower and will probably stay like that for a few days—unless the sun firms it up. rocks and logs were covered but still were an issue due to snow’s density even up towards 3100’ (our high point was 3300’). if you aim for a “warm” or sunny time of day during this snap, that’ll help with sharks. depth changed often. anywhere from 4-6” to 8-9” of fresh. with a medium of 7-8”. there seemed to be some what of a base left over above 3100’. wind moving this light snow around will effect isolated depths. would definitely suggest just going. you’ll be aight. Bear is always a good bet in low tide—you can just revert to the road if it’s bad. pictures from that day.
