Bad Wipeout

Intense. I googled along the thread about the mt Marcy rescue and sadly it seems the experienced ranger that participated or led the rescue and was interviewed died within the last few weeks in connection with an ice climbing accident in Alaska. A shame, obviously, and suggests that bad accidents can happen to those steeped in preparedness.

More about the ice climbing accident. The climbing partner and friend is in critical condition.

Beyond a bad wipeout: Jackson Hole skier death ruled homicide.

https://www.skimag.com/news/jackson-hole-skier-collision-homicide/
Only a ruling by the coroner. No criminal charges have been filed yet, as of May 3 when the Ski Mag article was published.

The man who died was 71 and very well known. He was a very good skier and a long time instructor. My instructor at JHMR is a Ski Diva and she was one of his many friends in Jackson. Similar story as happened to Ron LeMaster, who died a few years ago after being hit on the slopes.

The man who died was on Rendezvous when he was hit, meaning the blue run out between the bowls accessed only by the JH tram and above the Hobacks area. Needless to say, there aren't many intermediates in that area because all the terrain is rated black. Many blues at JH would be rated black at other destination resorts.

Anyone heard of the Snow Angels Foundation? If not, read the SAM article.

I think a lot of ski resorts may be exceeding their recognized carrying capacity numbers as designated in their Forest Service lease agreements. If a slick lawyer figures that out and can prove that is the case in an incident like this it could be a very bad day in court for a ski area.

Given that the recent JHMR collision that resulted in a death happened at the very end of the season, I rather doubt there were too many people on the slopes that day. Pretty sure April 14 was Closing Day for 2023-24.

Written by Jeffrey Greenbaum, the medical director of the Emergency Department at St. Johns's Health in Jackson. He is the Medical Director of JHMR Ski Patrol.

Clearly, you have the incentive to avoid ski area collisions for the benefit of your personal health and legal responsibility. The professionals at the Teton Village Clinic and SJMC Emergency Department do not need your business, so be aware and stay safe. Practice defensive skiing strategies and know the code. And don’t forget to have fun.

Dr. Jeff’s Advice:

  1. Know the Code and stay in control.
  2. If you can’t stop then you’re going too fast.
  3. Practice defensive skiing.
  4. Never stop where uphill skiers cannot see you.
  5. Always stop on the side of the slope, not the center.
  6. Keep your group size small.
  7. Look uphill before starting from stationary or when merging.
  8. Don’t take blind jumps without a spotter.
  9. Teach your kids the ‘Rules of the Road.’
  10. Don’t leave the scene of an accident, wait for Patrol."

There is a picture of the poster for Snow Angels near the base of a JHMR lift in the article.

The death that caused the parents of the 5yo who died to co-founded the non-profit Snow Angels Foundation in 2023 happened in southern Wyoming in 2010. In that incident, the 23yo who hit the girl and her mother also died. The girl's mother was left with a traumatic brain injury and arm paralysis. The parents started working with NSAA on safety education in 2016. Including a few presentations in 2019 to ski resort staff at major resorts in Vermont.
