Back at it after 10+ years

Went to core, abs & legs classes before the vid and the class was mostly ladies.
If you want a class that's probably all women, try going to a Barre class. Essentially using exercises based on what ballet dancers do for warm up. I don't have the patience, but was a good ballet dancer in elementary school in NYC. Way too much of a tomboy to want to continue after that. Skiing, soccer, horseback riding and other sports were far more fun after that.

Pilates is good for core strength too.

For someone who really wants to do a deep dive into ski fitness, check out the books by Chris Fellows. The first one is called Total Fitness and came out in 2011. Looks like he came up with an updated version with a co-author that was published in 2019 called Fitness for Skiing and Snowboarding. Fellows is a former PSIA Alpine Team Member. He and his wife have been running NASTC out of Tahoe for multi-day clinics at several destination resorts for quite a while. I was lucky enough to do a special 3-morning clinic in 2010 in north Tahoe. Had my first lesson in deep powder at Squaw the third day.

Wow thanks!

I think I'm going to hit Plattekill (shhhh...I'll keep it quiet!) on Friday morning for my first go around. I've compiled my checklist of gear, equipment, food, etc and seem to be in a good spot heading into my re-entry. Get my daughter on the bus, make sure the car is packed up, double check, then act like a nervous wreck all the way to the mountain. Can't wait, but can wait...ya know? Thanks again for all of your comments, suggestions and replies - it means the world.

Nice going! After snowboarding 60+ days a year 10 years in a row I got burned out and quit in my early 40s. About 4 years ago I decided to give it a try it again and found I still love this sport. I'm now 64 and will probably do at least 60 days on the slopes this year. This sport is just so good!

So I bought a Plattekill ticket last week for Friday, woke up, poked my head outside and said, "Nope, not today." Too cold and I just knew my first day back would be a nightmare if I was freezing. So I swallowed the $62, along with a bit of my pride, and decided to make it a work day. Last night, I'm sitting around and realize I have a couple of hours free in the afternoon today and decided to make the 20 minute drive to Maple Ridge - a place I've never been before and known for a family/kid ski area with a very minimal drop. But I was desperate to get some turns in and get home by 6:30p. So I drove out and it was awesome - not so much for the mountain (more of a hill than anything, but certainly a great spot for kids and those looking to learn to ski), but for the fact that it was like riding a bike. By my second run, I was making quick, precise turns, carving into the heavily groomed hard snow. I was amazed by these new skis. It's almost like cheating. They bite into the snow and make my transitions as easy as pie. I had a f'ing blast despite the short runs. Around 6 it started getting flooded with kids and the lights were playing tricks with my eyes - it seemed extremely dark and I thought maybe they waited too long to turn on the lights. Plus, my legs were starting to complain a bit. For $30 and a quick drive, it was fun. I'm just blown away by this new ski technology. Just unreal. So happy I was able to get some turns in to hold me over for a few days. Had a big smile on my face during the drive back and can't wait to hit another spot in the next few days.
