APA approves the Whiteface expansion

Haha that's a big can of worms.

Not the stupid part. That's pretty cut and dried. :geek:

The width of the trails has been updated since 1938 due to safety needs of racing. The limits were less than what is currently in the rules. I think the modifications to the rules happened around 2000. Twister was widened to 120 feet summer, 2004.

In preparation for the 1980 Olympics, the downhill runs at Whiteface were widened despite the rules. After the Olympics, there was a line of trees planted on those runs and you were not supposed to ski on the other side of the trees (mostly skiers right on Skyward and Cloudspin). These rules were not enforced whenever I was there.

Was it changed once or twice? I thought one time they added to the allowed mileage?

@snoloco I'd like your opinion about the 16.5 million dollar 2 stage detachable lift for whiteface. If you were going to solve whatever problem(s) that lift is solving is that how you would do it?

If one were to ski on the other side of the trees, what might happen? Societal collapse? Nuclear fallout? Cats getting a long with dogs? Jesus fucking christ.......I bet all hell would break loose. It's a good thing we have intelligent humans making solid and rightfully so enforceable laws and rules, otherwise I can't imagine the mayhem that would occur.

Haha, fucking gubment.

Not sure. Could be fun?

I remember being up there on Cloudspin/Skyward at WF and seeing what sort of looked like a line with about 1 foot of the top of a 3 foot tree showing and a sign saying to stay on the left side of the these "trees". At the time, I did not know about the rules and limits in the NYS constitution about Gore and WF. The rule seemed insane. Eventually I asked a ski patroler about it and he was able to explain the reason. But nobody enforced the rule as everybody was skiing on the entire cleared expanse of the trails.

To me, all these limits are insane as there are only a few spots (maybe 1000acres) where lift-served skiing is allowed in the 6 million acre ADK Park. The ADK Park has recovered from the crazy clear cut logging that caused the Park to be created over 100 years ago. Allowing more modern development of skiing at the 2 ORDA locations isn't the end of the world.

The rules are plain ole silly. Like you said, there's only two ski areas in the park that's 6 million acres. The enviro nuts must be a real Pia.

Unfortunately the greenie nuts like to play dirty as well, as was clearly illustrated in the snowmobile treee cutting case; the greenies completely went along with NYS when NYS was negotiating the Finch Pruyn deal as to allowing snowmobile connector trails from the affected towns. Peter Bauer and Dave Gibson, were very proud of themselves for destroying a deal that THEY AUTHORIZED.
I truly do not like them if you weren't sure;)
