The Fire and Rain and Smoke Thread

The approach to fighting the Blue Mountain fire seems quite different than what happens in the west.
I've been wondering how much knowledge fire fighters around here have of dealing with wildfire

The approach to fighting the Blue Mountain fire seems quite different than what happens in the west. Or maybe it just the reporting.

The terrain and forest have a different type of fuel than out west. It’s mostly dry leaves which work their way in between rocks and boulders. We rarely have this issue in the fall it’s mostly a dry weather stretch in spring before the trees leaf out. The upper part of the north side has some pine and fir trees which could be a problem.

They started a back fire along a bordering road. I’m hopeful they can prevent an East/ North expansion. They’re using bulldozers to create fire breaks.

There are not too many large aerial resources nearby as there hasn’t been a demand.

I’m sure they’ve had some training or education but very little actual experience.

I imagine the forests there are a completely different beast. At least you don’t get the winds quite like we do in the SW but there certainly isn’t any shortage of fuel out east.

It sounds like Blue Mountain Resort isn't in danger of the fire. However, it's going to take a while longer before the threat is over from what's being called the Gap Fire. The number of volunteer fire departments involved must be unusual.

" . . .
On Monday night, Blue Mountain Resort in Palmerton reported the blaze was about 4 miles away from the resort.

“We are using our pumps and water retention ponds to help fill fire tankers,” a Facebook post said.

On Monday, the Greater Northern Lehigh Chamber announced an emergency fundraiser, organized with the support of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, that aims to provide crucial aid to the local volunteer fire departments and emergency crews fighting to contain the blaze.

A release said the “urgent effort aims to support the volunteer fire departments and emergency crews who have been tirelessly working to protect the area and contain the flames.”

The wind shifted sometime around 1:30PM this afternoon and now my neighborhood in north Jersey is inundated with smoke. I believe it is from the Englewood Cliff fires in Palisades Interstate Park but it could also be the fires burning to the west of us in Ramapo Mountain State Forest as Tranquility Ridge/ Sterling Forest State Park.

[UPDATE] went up to Englewood Cliffs to take a look at the fire first hand. Fire was burning up to the shoulder of Palisades Parkway at Exit 1. The Long Path had been acting as a fire break but the fire seemed to have jumped it. Fire crews were just wrapping up spraying water on hot spots as I drove past.

The smoke we are experiencing in the Bergen County area is definitely coming from the fires at Ramapo Mountain State Forest near Pompton Lakes and the fires at Tranquility Ridge/Sterling Forest. Pray for rain.
