Thinking about this a bit more.
Mt van Ho has snowmaking and brutal new trails. What it doesn't have is a super fancy stadium. For nordic events, every recent Olympics and world championships starts and finishes in a football or track and field sized stadium. For example:
No way you're shoehorning one of those into the Ho. And the grandstands? For the skiathlon, IMHO one of the more contrived events in skiing. Go as hard as you can skiing 10 km classic, make a pit stop, change skis, go as hard as you can skating 10 km. The ski exchange would almost certainly have to be in the old stadium.
Scheduling between cross-country, biathlon, and nordic combined over two weeks? That's something like 15 events, then add in men's and women's races. In 1980, there was a separate stadium for biathlon.
Again, not as easy as those downstate guys make it out to be.
