Gore Mountain Conditions

The snowmaking reservoir near the summit was half full, but I don’t think it’s a water problem. There was drought summer into early autumn, but lots of rain since then and creeks and ponds are pretty full around here.
The majority of New York is currently dry including the Adirondacks and the Taconics. Nearly 75% of the state has abnormally dry to moderate drought conditions.

A snowmaking pond cannot be drained completely. Plus given the shape of it, the amount of water when the level is low is probably far less than half the capacity.

Given where the Jiminy Peak pond is located, it's pump capacity that matters for refilling the pond from water sources in the valley when rainfall is scarce. When I was hiking JP in early October, had a chat with a ski patroller out walking his dog. He lives right across the road. He said his impression was that the ongoing drought was a big concern for the snowmaking team.

When water is limited, can't afford to make snow that is likely to melt off before mid-December.

I live less than 10 miles from the mountain on the New York side. The map shows no drought or dry for our area, same for Berkshire County in MA. And early October was the tail end of the drought, we have had a lot of rain in the area since then. They refill the pond from the creek at the bottom, which has plenty of water in it now, but there is a limit set by the town as to the amount of water they can draw annually. They may be budgeting their early season use considering that the sparse crowd was probably 80+% passholders.
They did groom and then blew a topcoat on the open trails on Saturday night, even delaying starting the lift until 10 am to keep making snow until the temperature went above freezing.

The NYS map shows dry for the Taconic Crest. The Mass drought map shows abnormally dry for northern Berkshire County which includes Hancock and Jiminy Peak.

Conditions were good, early. I didn't stay beyond that.

Foxlair and Sunway were lined with corduroy and looked ready to go, maybe tomorrow? Twister and Wild Air were getting the works today as well. They seem to really want to get the ski bowl open, Guns lining the way on full blast all the way up Moxham.

In years past, the website always said where they were headed next. You'd think Sunway would be at the top of the list.

Any insight @Cork?
