Gore Mountain Conditions

Whatabout a carpet or simple rope tow near the wide flatfish spot at the top of the Gondi at Gore?
Folks could download if a green wasn’t ready yet. It’s colder up there.
It is a common issue for opening beginner terrain early in the season that it is often at low elevation and difficult to maintain cover. Belleayre was able to solve this by putting a magic carpet and bunny hill at the top, and it was possible because there was a relatively flat area at the top of the gondola. Since all of their other beginner terrain is at the bottom of the gondola, it is connected to the rest of their beginner terrain.

This could work for Gore. If it runs perpendicular to the gondola and is directly behind the terminal, then some trees would need to be cleared, and the ski patrol building relocated, but a 200' long magic carpet with a 100' wide slope would fit there.

One issue I’ve heard from instructors is that the summit learning area only really works for true carpet beginners with 2 hour lessons. The 15 minute roundtrip eats up too much time in a 1 hour lesson. Since Belle only has intermediate and expert trails off the top, downloading back to base is the only option. If someone progresses enough to ride the lift they have to come back down to then ride up the Not Lightning Quad. The idea works well in terms of reliable snow and getting people a scenic ride and summit experience but it does not have good learning value due to excessive ride time. At Gore you could potentially take them down Ruby to Sunway but then you’re mixing learners with speeding commuters.

This time of year you need to compare terrain mileage, but on this metric, Gore is considerably underperforming the other ORDA mountains. Gore currently has 3.24 miles of open terrain. Belleayre has 5.42 miles and Whiteface has 5.22 miles.
What up Snow!?!

I think I remember correctly... Last year they did not cover the 'cutoff' that went over to Lower Sunway? It was even labeled as going to Lower Sunway but was mostly bare rocks. I know because I had to inch my way thru to get to Lower Sunway. I was not alone by the way...

I was very impressed with the coverage today. Was nice to not have the strip of death down the middle of showcase. It looks like Foxlair and Sunway will be open soon, and maybe they'll work on Twister next. I could see some whales built up through the trees.

Belleayre and Jiminy are comparable in size, but even Gore is killing it compared to “Little Killington.” I did laps both days, Jiminy has 1.5 miles of trail open, less than two feet of base and not full width in some places. It has a huge snowmaking system that can resurface the entire mountain overnight if necessary, but not making use of it so far this season. The snowmaking reservoir near the summit was half full, but I don’t think it’s a water problem. There was drought summer into early autumn, but lots of rain since then and creeks and ponds are pretty full around here. So y’all thank your lucky ORDA stars.
