Hello folks! We just finished a 12 day, 69 mile backcountry trek at Philmont Scout Camp in Cinammaron, New Mexico.

I’ll hopefully post more detail and pictures. It was an amazing experience with some very real challenges and a ton of positives. Ultimately, we walked about 120 miles with pack weights between 35 and 50 pounds and completed a few hours of conversation work in the form of trail building at 9,600 feet.

The highest we slept at was about 11,600 about 100 feet below the summit of Mount Phillips and base camp was at 6,600 feet.

3 camps were dry, meaning at times we did not have water sources for about 2 days at a time. Carry in carry out with some staffed camps where you could drop trash. Camp follows leave no trace policy and we put up bear ropes each night.

All scout led, including my 14 year old. Adults present for health and safety.

The picture below is at sunrise from a rocky peak called the tooth of time at 9000 feet, surrounded by about ten miles in all directions by meadow at 6,600 feet of elevation. The trail there ended is a few hundred yards of 45 degree rock scramble.

We saw elk, mule deer, bear scat, a mountain lion print, and heard coyotes calling all around us one night. Set up one camp in hail. Mostly good weather with periods of rain around 3 pm. Also hiked 2/3 of one day through burn scar from a wild fire.

Awesome time.

Congratulations DomB! 120 miles with full packs in 12 days at significant elevation is impressive! What an experience that I'm sure all involved will not soon forget.
