Gore Mountain Conditions

I skied my 50th day of the season yesterday at Gore.

Hit Lies and The Rumor multiple times, hero snow early made them challenging but not really a problem.

By 11 am, the snow really got soft and grippy, so I probably skied another hour and a half until my legs were mushier then the snow, drank a couple of beers I brought from home in the sunshine, and called it a day.

Skied the first couple hours with Rick, 72 years old, local guy who knows the mountain well. It was great to chat, as we had a lot in common...both retired teachers, whitewater paddlers (although it's been a few decades since I've paddled any whitewater), RV'ers, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if some of you know him.

Here's a trip report I posted on a bicycle forum (Velocipede Salon) that I belong to...

Today I skied my 50th day of the season.

I've been at Catamount a lot, but have also skied at Butternut, Belleayre, Gore, Whiteface, Berkshire East, Bousquet, and Killington.

I've improved a lot, and headed up to Gore Mountain today to grab my 50th ski day.

The first time I ever skied was about 50 years ago.

I was a Boy Scout in Port Chester, NY Troop 11, and very much wanted to ski.

We took a trip to Gore Mountain, leaving in the dark, in a snowstorm, on a Friday night for the weekend.

My Uncle Paul was Assistant Scoutmaster, and myself and three other kids rode up to North Creek, NY, in his 2WD, Ford F-150. Three on the tree, Cap on the bed with two plywood bunks. Two kids rode in the cab with him, two in the back. He pulled over every hour or so to swap the warm kids in the cab with the frozen ones in the back. It was snowing like crazy and was probably a four and a half hour trip if the weather was good.

Ironically, Gore Mountain commenced skiing in 1964, the year I was born.

These are the things that memories are made of.

New equipment ... two pairs of Stöckli's...Montero AR's, and Stormrider 95's.

Anyway, fifty years later I decided Gore would be the place I would ski my 50th day of the season.

I skied two double black diamonds for the first time..."The Rumor," and "Lies."

I skied them each multiple times..

I'll go back to Bousquet tomorrow morning for a few hours, start up on bicycle rides again this week (it is in the 60's, after all), and maybe hit Belleayre and/or Gore this coming Thursday and Friday.

After that, maybe I'll drop my skis off for a final tune before putting them away for the season.

This might be the first Winter in my entire life that I'm not quite ready for it to end.

Here's some pics from today....

Today was likely my best day of the season. Great conditions everywhere. My pick of the day was moxam in the ski bowl.

Tom
The lady who parked next to me at Song yesterday when it opened also skied Gore Thursday and said it skied great all day. She said she liked Sagamore best.

Thanks for the passholder appreciation!!🤬🫏🦴🦴🦴
I agree I'm not sure what they are saving it for given it's going to be super warm mid-week and lose even more coverage...when it won't be open anyways....

This aside had a great spring day today. Had a less advanced skier friend with me today so didn't do my normal non-stop Rumor laps as usual but had a great day nonetheless. Lower mountain great and surfy to start. Rumor and Lies excellent. Hullabaloo was actually my ROTD. Was perfect corn and launching off the headwall full speed was a treat. Fairview and Uncas a close second. But really everything skiied great. Took a lower mountain showcase lap at 3 and that was surprisingly good and not a slush fest.

Never made it to BR or the Bowl as my friend definitely wasn't up for the traverse in soft sticky snow.

Gondi went down at some point near 3 and took them a while to offload everyone. Never ran after that.

Back for tomorrow but ya know...no ski bowl because it's not supposed to rain until near 4 now...
