Superior is a sight to behold.

A little more LCC porn.

So, a week ago Friday my daily check of OpenSnow and the like hinted that Utah could see some storms this week. Ok, check Delta to see how ridiculous tickets are so I can get back to whatever it is I was doing. What’s this? A ticket I have enough SkyMiles for? Booked that quick….and the watch was on.

A storm that was supposed to deliver single digits dropped more than 20 on LCC Monday into Tuesday. Ok. Then the big storm predicted for Wed to Fri showed up. Well then, time to book a car and lodging! All told LCC got more than 50” of snow this week. Powder Mt. did ok too, picking up more than 3’. As would be expected, I was excited.

Pardon the interruption but….I hate JFK. It just has the best flights. But man, 678 sucks. I won’t bore you with the details, let’s just say I JUST made my flight. Stressful start, but I was en route.

Some logistics. Staying down Canyon in Murray. Cheap decent hotel (Crystal Inn & Suites). Used the UTA bus today (ended up deciding on Alta, and I didn’t have a parking reservation). Not a big fan, but that’s neither here nor there. At least there is a UTA Ski Bus stop right outside the hotel. Oh, and I got the Salt Lake Ski Super Pass. At least with that I didn’t have to pay for the bus! The pass costs I think $162 a day (3 day min) and is good at Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, and Solitude. An Alta ticket online was pushing two bills. So, if you find yourself in SLC and you aren’t beholden to Ikon, check it out.

I’m going to post daily on the mountains I hit, if you don’t mind. Yesterday I decided that today, 3/8, I was going with Alta. Just about everything at Snowbird opened yesterday. Same wasn’t true at Alta. Ballroom/Baldy Shoulder, Backside, and Devil’s Castle haven’t been open this week….and they were on the schedule for today. Powder prospects were much better for Alta. It was the right call.

At least the bus had me at Alta about 8:00. Quite the social scene, the front of the lift queue on a stellar Saturday morning at a place like Alta.

IMG_3713.jpeg

Only 5 or 6 back in the singles line I got a good chair at 9:15 opening. Get to top of Collins and rope had just dropped on Ballroom, while there was already a conga line out the gate to the Backside. Easy choice, take the guaranteed untracked powder. Jumped in on the Baldy Shoulder.

IMG_3721.jpeg

The storms this week came in right side up. Two feet of light powder on a couple of feet of denser powder that covered any firm from the Tuesday to Wednesday thaw-freeze. Knee deep floaty powder, mission accomplished.

Back up Collins and a quick run with some groomer, some powder down to Sugarloaf, see if anything’s happen at the gate to Devil’s Castle. Sure enough when I get to the top of the lift a line is starting to form.

IMG_3726.jpeg

20 odd people back, more good powder prospects. Wait was maybe 40 minutes. It would be worth it, getting untracked snow in the Castle after 50+ inches of new snow. Always tricky on the traverse out, near the front. Gotta ignore so much powder turn possibility to go further out, but how far? Sometimes old legs trump vertical of the run. However, I patiently picked my drop in. To have the expanse of the terrain below Devil’s Castle in front of you with not a track in sight, hard to beat that.

IMG_3735.jpeg

Wish I had more photos of those runs for you, but you know the pressure at the front of the crowd on a powder day rope drop.

I figured I’d go check out Catherine’s, even though I knew it would be pretty skied out. It’s a fun zone. When going out gates and on hikes or traverses I usually adventure as far as I can, often finding my way to the boundaries. I passed a lot of eh looking cut up on the traverse out Catherine’s. The backcountry saw a lot of traffic yesterday and everything was skiing stable. I had my gear with me. The goods beyond the boundary were too tempting. Found this fun line in the Rocky Point area off the back of Catherine’s.

IMG_3755.jpeg

After the relatively short skin back up it was decision time. I had been eyeing up the Mt. Tuscarora western face leading back to the Catherine’s run out.

IMG_3759.jpeg

So, out over Catherine’s Pass toward Tuscarora. There’s no way I had legs or time get to the summit of Tuscarora, plus the midday sun was starting of affect things. I went until the right combination of tired legs and BC sense hit, and jumped on the shoulder.

IMG_3760.jpeg

My legs are toast (note: Crystal Inn and Suites has a hot tub). Not a shabby day.

Down by Catherine’s Lake when transitioning from my Rocky Point run I shared beers and chocolates with a crew that was skiing this zone.

It was one of the guys first seasons living in Utah. Turns out he’s from NY and worked at Gore and guided rafts on the upper Hudson River. Go figure. As remote as some of the things we do may be….it’s a small world.

Always trust in Jason! Going to be warmer today than forecasts Friday had been indicating. Late start today, let things soften up. Decided I’m going to drive up to Brighton today. No bus for me! Check out a new place. Also interested in checking out the Milly Gate, maybe explore a little more of the backcountry between Alta/Brighton from a different side, conditions permitting. Brighton is a good spot for a late start. With a 7 hour ticket maybe I’ll even get in a little night skiing, who knows!

glad you had a FANTASTIC day at Alta...For a powder saturday, you did amazing...

Had the same issue with JFK last year.. We live between 1-4hrs away...Google did us dirty, said should take 1.5hrs..we left for our flight using that info...it took almost 4hrs..we always leave a big cushion...

To take advantage of a Delta award flight, I schlepped 75 pounds of luggage (a ski bag, a boot bag, and a backpack) on a NJ Transit train, transferred at Penn Station to the E-train, then to the Air Train to JFK. Did it in 80 minutes. Quit yer bitchin!
On Thursday I actually thought about taking the train to work (one Penn) on Friday (ski stuff with, done it before), and then taking LIRR to the Air Train. It’s not a bad trip, even with ski stuff. However, on the return it’s the Red Eye straight to the office for work. Done it, it’s rough. Decided not to this time. Friday at 4:00 I was wishing I had, but it worked out.

I’m glad I chose Brighton today.

Superior looks just as spectacular from the BCC side.

My late start turned into noon since I didn’t have a parking reservation, but that was fine. Sleep in, let things soften. I didn’t even realize last night we lost an hour. My legs were tired anyway!

I didn’t explore a ton of the inbounds terrain but I’ll say this, Brighton has killer views and nice steep open terrain off the Great Western Express.

IMG_3778.jpeg

Brighton also has great tree skiing. Bonus, the leftover powder in the trees stayed soft all day!

I do think I’ve found my new day or two after a storm destination in Utah. Brighton has a liberal gate policy, with tons of accessible backcountry terrain and ‘out of bounds’ areas off Pioneer Ridge that lead back to the base. Most of it even today was virtually untouched. I never even made it to the Milly chair, I spent time exploring out the Crest gate.

This is Marco Polo, just at the top of the short hike/skin to Pioneer Ridge. Steep, prone to avy (and it was Considerable today), and no visible skin track back, I passed

IMG_3780.jpeg

I explored a little further out Pioneer Ridge. Looking down into the Green Slope zone. Given the avy forecast and the temps mellow was where it’s at.

IMG_3784.jpeg

With a skin track already set back up I couldn’t pass on that. While it may have been a little heavy, I still got my untracked powder for today.

IMG_3789.jpeg

While there was still plenty of the Ridge to explore out to Pioneer Peak, after the easy skin back up I dropped the other side back toward the resort. Nice steep trees that still has great snow. Found this nice powdery steep (pics never do justice, this was easily north of 40 degrees) chute on the way down.

IMG_3794.jpeg

Not a ton of runs today, but I explored and educated myself, and found some great turns. I’ll be back to Brighton.

Looks like it may be back to Alta tomorrow. When I checked late morning before making the call on Brighton I did check the Alta report. East Castle and Baldy were showing closed. East Castle is a fun zone pretty far out that doesn’t open often, but it’s showing on the schedule for tomorrow. No idea how the powder is holding up out there but I hope to find out. Baldy is also showing on the schedule for tomorrow, it would be great to hit Main Baldy again. We’ll see……

Sunrise on Superior!

IMG_3801.jpeg

So today, Monday March 10, it was indeed back to Alta. While East Castle and Main Baldy and the Baldy Shoulder did open yesterday, the zone lookers right of East Baldy over to Little Chute hadn’t, so there was still a chance to nab some untracked in this zone.

IMG_3802.jpeg

Waited patiently for Ballroom Gate 1 to open for a short run, then hit it from the East Baldy gates. Led to this…

IMG_3804.jpeg

….and I snagged my untracked powder for the day to keep the streak going. Surprisingly light given the temps, the goods up high are well preserved.

IMG_3806.jpeg

Fun zone.
IMG_3817.jpeg

From there I decided it was time for an East Castle adventure. East Castle is a really fun area that doesn’t open often, and a trek. However, even though it opened yesterday it held promise of good turns.

IMG_3828.jpeg

IMG_3831.jpeg

IMG_3837.jpeg

Took a while, but it led to some decent steep cut up powder.
IMG_3842.jpeg

IMG_3843.jpeg

IMG_3847.jpeg

About a third of the way down from the top of East Castle you can go over the ridge to this ramp off the shoulder.
IMG_3861.jpeg

Gotta be a little careful to cut back to the main slope because it cliffs out a bit at the bottom, at least beyond my comfort level! However, it saw less traffic and held great snow.
IMG_3852.jpeg

IMG_3857.jpeg

After that it was a few trees and groomers, nothing picture worthy. Never did make it to Main Baldy today but Snowbird is on tap for tomorrow, so I’ll try and get over to it from High Baldy perhaps. I did see the Baldy chair spinning today, and Mineral Basis awaits….maybe tomorrow?
