There has been a lot of discussion about the improvements coming to the Ski Bowl in the Gore Conditions thread. I wanted to go more into depth, and thought it deserved its own thread.

This will be the third version of the ski bowl, hence the thread title. For the purpose of this thread:

Ski Bowl 1.0 = The original Ski Bowl that predated Gore.

Ski Bowl 2.0 = Current version, where it's connected to Gore, but is a red headed stepchild and is rarely open.

Ski Bowl 3.0 = The proposed plan for the Ski Bowl.

Construction on Ski Bowl 3.0 will begin this summer, as the lift is being replaced. The new lift will be a high speed quad, on a new alignment to looker's right. As such, it will not follow 46er. This will allow for new trails to be constructed to looker's right of the lift, though they won't be cut right away.

There is also a plan to replace the lodge, though I'm not sure exactly when this will happen.

Ski Bowl 3.0 is supposed to become the new hub for summer operations. This will include a mountain coaster or zipline, additional hiking trails, and lift served mountain biking. I expect that summer operations at the main base will cease, and it will no longer be used outside of winter.

There are opportunities for real estate development on town land, but this would need to be done by a private developer. ORDA isn't allowed to do it.

Here are my thoughts, starting with lift and trail improvements:

First and foremost, Gore needs to make massive upgrades to snowmaking capacity before they even think about expanding snowmaking footprint. Sadly, it appears this mistake will be repeated, and the new lift will not be open any additional days compared to the current one.

If they can ever improve snowmaking capacity again, then I think more consistent openings of the expanded terrain will be great. The trails also don't count against the mileage limit as they are on town land.

Lodge:

If the area is to function as a base area, then it needs a bigger lodge with more services, so this will be a welcome improvement. But it will be underutilized if the snowmaking issue is not addressed.

Summer activities:

Moving the summer activities to the ski bowl makes a lot of sense. There are things they can do on town land, but not on state land, such as installing a mountain coaster or zip line. It also moves it closer to North Creek, potentially helping local businesses.

Real Estate Development:

All good news to me. Gore can't attract overnight visitors because it's a 40 minute drive back to Lake George for lodging. A larger lodging base will also benefit local businesses.

Nope. Think fall leaf lookers and hikers.

Not Town of Johnsburg land. It’s planned to be on private land within the town.

It seems
"Article XIV allows up 40 miles of ski trails on Gore and Pete Gay Mountains and limits the width of those trails to 80 to 200 feet in width provided not more than 8 miles of such trails are in excess of 120 feet wide.”
based on correspondence from the APA and referencing Mike Pratt found here:

Ya like rollercoaster thingys

It’s not all about you.
What? It has to do with the skiing public and ORDA's inability to keep the Ski Bowl open now due to lack of traffic. How does spending $30 million on a new lodge at the Ski Bowl change the current lack of traffic that keeps the Ski Bowl closed?
the new lodge is for more than alpine skiing. With the realities of winter in the new millennium, the lack of natural snow has made Mt. Van Hoevenberg and Gore, with their snowmaking on Nordic trails, the venues for 90% of the Nordic racing in eastern NY. MVH got an upgrade a few years ago to restore it to international Nordic and biathlon standards. The new lodge will allow bigger and better nordic events at Gore. Biathlon range next?
Hilarious. After spending $60 MILLION on Mt Van Ho, ORDA will never allow any national/international events at the Ski Bowl. High school and citizen Nordic racing does zero to support building a $30 million lodge at North Creek.

By the way, thanks for adding some humor to the discussion by mentioning rare sport of Biathlon. The cost to participate in Biathlon makes skiing look affordable. The Empire State Games Biathlon Super Sprint Race in Feb had a miniscule total of about 37 (thirty-seven ) participants over all age groups. That included all male and all female athletes starting with boy/girl (age 13-16) ranging up to Master 70 (age 70+).

I think adding and maintaining a biathlon range at the Ski Bowl would be a perfect use of ORDA funds.
The last sentence is an example of sarcasm.

There’s also the summer Empire State Games to consider as well.
Empire State Senior Games is gonna be held in The Crown City of Cortland NY in June.
There is “Cards” competition category and ya can stay&play at the Holiday Inn.
Too much winning.
Empire State Games were administered by the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation from 1978 to 2010. Empire State Senior Games are a spin-off run by a not for profit organization. I attended every summer ESG as either an athlete, coach, official or state competition chair for one of the sports. When NYS ended ESG, the large pool of extremely capable people in Lake Placid who are experienced at being local organizers for everything up to World Cups took over the Winter ESG.
The real ESG was a serious multisport athletic competition and did not include “cards” except maybe as an activity to accompany other out of competition activities such as “drinking.”
