Your Worst Ski Crash

1980 Something me and my buddies built huge kicker at a middle school and taught ourselves to do front flips.
Fast forward to night skiing at Doe mountain now Bear creek.
big dump foot or so with big moguls. My one buddy spots me from the chair and yells do a flip.
I get halfway round and spot a pair of skis on my landing, I stop rotating and landed on my head!
Barely conscious I spot Mr A hole walk out of woods and exclaimed “Oh here’s my skis “ No are you okay…..nothing. I was in the middle of the slope!
I couldn’t walk but was crawling towards him with an intent to do him severe bodily harm. He skied off and I never saw him again. I pulled myself together and made it to the lodge where my girlfriend was. I literally couldn’t remember her name for a day. Afterwards I started having reading issues, I loose focus on lines and end up on different sentences. Still have trouble today.
F u A hole!!
If you have to piss park you skis somewhere else.
Hopefully karma caught up with you!
Rant over

March 2007. Spring conditions. On a green slope heading over to the chairlift. Passing over a small mogul field that I had been over several times already that day. Did not stop to look as I was trying to keep up with a friend and was skiing just a tad faster than usual. A rock had been exposed in the path that I had been over again and again. It removed the ski from one foot. I said "Oh, shit" right as I attempted to make the right angle turn at the bottom of the moguls onto a narrow trail back to the lift. Did not succeed in staying on the trail and smashed into first one tree then into another and over a pile of nicely stacked logs. As I hit the first tree, I put my hands up in front of my face kind of crossed to protect my noggin. After the impact the thought came to me "That was bad." But I was still in motion. After that I don't remember anything except people standing over me and discussing how to get me on a sled.

Broken helmet, smashed goggles, two broken wrists, one pretty much shattered. Pins and plates in both. 18 months of rehab.

New mantra: Do you want to hit a tree at this speed? Then slow down!

Trivia. That morning I had been ranked 18th on the vertical list. Still finished the season at number 25.

Worst was at Gore as a young adult. Up top off the red Gondola somewhere. Ice all over the place, no helmets, it was a low speed spinning backwards bang on the ice. Curly hair and thick wool hat saved the bell from a complete knockout. Might have been the head hitting the head wall on Chatiemac.
Maybe that’s why they're called head walls.

December 2017 I was in strong skiing shape from early skinning and the hill was filling with snow. Riding chair 1 mid morning I realized patrol just opened the west bowl gates. People were already on the traverse to Picture chutes and the hourglass my favorites. I'm a first tracks slut so I decided to try Connies and beat the hordes. At the gate there were two sets of tracks down the fall line into the very steep trees. I skied just to the right and found a ramp with a few turns of thigh deep puurfect snow. I thought this might be the run of my life. Ahead was a ledge and drop , two tree tops were the only things in site. I prepared to get a good look at this chute before landing in the ultra deep. Over the ledge my heard sank when I saw below a bombed chute devoid of any snow. Those two patrolers flushed that snow and what was left was rocks stumps and ice and yup , those two big trees. In the air I wondered whether this might be the last run of my life. I thought landing on my hip and trying to self arrest was worth a try , but instantly was on my back sliding head first downhill fast. I quickly realized if I didn't split those trees it would really hurt. God was with me , I split those tree sliding on my back and some how hit soft snow flipped into the air landing downhill softly gently in deep snow .Opening my eyes to see a jagged stump inches from my face.......not a scrach on me. Worst fall , hell no. Luckiest fall , thank God , yes.

? Right on brother. Memory is like yesterday huh.

So you were only like 1996 years old, that is kind of cheating. ?

Harvey , you so right , it could have been yesterday. The way I see it I cheated injury 3 times in 10 seconds. The landing , the slide through the two pines , and the flip to the stump. P.S. I'm just few years older than you.

2 years ago at Bell in Catskills

I have two for ya.
December 29th 2018, Jay Peak. Finally built up the guts to ride up the tram (I'm terribly afraid of heights) and was headed down to ride it as I wanted to ski Green Beret. It was very foggy and there was a ton of flat light, what didn't help is that I had the wrong lens in my goggles. Hit a ditch around the bottom of Lower Exhibition that I did not see at all. Flew right out of my skis and landed on my left wrist, spraining it. Got checked out by ski patrol, the nearest hospital was an hour away but we decided to eat lunch instead, I love my life choices. Went back out, wrist wrapped and all the next day until I landed on my wrist again under the Bonaventure lift and decided it must have been a sign to stop skiing.
Some time in 2019, was headed down Tongora at Belleayre. Was a tad bit slick, all I remember was me flying out of both of my skis out of the blue and sliding down the run on my bare stomach and landing in a pile of snow. Went down to Overlook to grab a dry T-shirt and then went to the maintenance shop to fix my ski brake which had been bent up.
