Short-eared Owls have returned to the Washington County Grasslands. They migrate from the artic to spend their winter hunting for voles and entertaining the local photographers with their aerial acrobatics.
Voles are some creepy looking little buggers too. When I was a kid I had a cat that had some kind of deep seated hatred of voles. She did everything she could to extinct the whole species
There has been a wild goose chase going on in Washington County. Not far from Willard Mt in Greenwich I photographed the Taiga Bean-goose, which is a native of Europe and Asia, only recorded 3 or 4 times in North America and only this once on the eastern coast. I met people from Philly and Boston as bird nerds are flocking to the little upstate town and creating traffic jams.
