Whiteface vs. Gore over Xmas and NYE?

I am on Ski3 for the first time this year and am wondering how the snow coverage, % open, and crowds compare at Gore vs Whiteface in late December/Early Jan. Any observations?

I’ve only skied at Gore once and it was fine. I’ve been at Whiteface 5-6 times and I’ve always had a blast there. Granted, I’ve been lucky and have been at Whiteface mostly on powder days.

The problem with both is slower openings of terrain than the competition, but Gore probably has a greater amount and percentage open at that time. Note that both have events for the University Games which will direct a lot of resources away from opening regular terrain.

That’s interesting. I would’ve guessed that Whiteface would have more snow just because they’re further north. It’s not clear to me on why the university games are going to affect terrain/services at the mountains. How are they related?

Gore has invested a lot more in snowmaking in recent years, and their terrain is less rocky and requires less snow to cover.

As for the University Games, the terrain used for the events will need a lot of snowmaking, and that will get prioritized over terrain available to the public. Same is true when Killington has the World Cup, though that's much earlier in the season.

I've never been to WF over the holidays but would imagine they get quite a bit more people that Gore. I spend most of my time at Gore but always go to WF one weekend each year and always prefer Gore. I just find it to be a more interesting mountain.

The idea of University Games taking resources away from terrain is a bummer. I guess that just convinced me to supplement my Ski3 pass with the Vermont 4 pack.

There's more lodging at Lake Placid, and, at the same time, it's effectively a smaller mountain. My vote: Gore. But I don't ski Xmas week.

Set your expectations low at either mountain. Both will have limited terrain. 1500 skiers will make lines long. Good chance of a thaw freeze cycle. More times then not the skiing it not fun

'Everyone' wants to ski at Christmas = It's often not that great. (skiers/terrain)

Still, that won't stop me, I'll be skiing.

Sometimes it snows. If there is enough for nordic, I'll be smiling.

Remember this?
