Where'm I Gonna Live

OK, finally looking at retiring to the north country. Where should I go?

It’s like telling folks where the best fishin holes and snow is on the interwebs.
Best to discover places that fit ya yourself.
Do know harm.

I’m a fan of the Plattsburgh area- either the farm country to the south, along the lake or west of the town towards the ADKs

I've always found the areas within the triangle created by the towns of Port Henry, Westport and Keene particularly scenic, easily accessible and offering plenty of variety in terms of landscape (lake, mountains, rolling farmland) with almost enough "town" to fulfill most errands. That said I have not lived in any of those places longterm, rather a frequent passer through and occasional visitor in my time living on the other side of the lake.

And is near to a superhighway and good medical facilities at both CVPH and UVM FA and a straihjt shot to Montreal ??

Yeah... originally I was thinking Saranac Lake / Vermontville / Bloomingdale, but now leaning a bit towards Jay for the accessibility to Plattsburgh. Fortunate that I have a network of people that I know up there.

I voted Saranac for you because:
1. Dewey
2. Available housing stock
3. Good location to access a lot of other stuff
4. Hospital
5. Good people mix (Some of the other places are a little too “second or third or fourth homeowner-ish”, which makes for kind of a hollow community in my opinion)

An old friend I worked with just got his fishin guidin license and has been livin in Saranac Lake last few years.
He likes it.

Things change very slowly in the dacks. The health care in general is sub par. If you are looking for access to decent care the park is probably not the right place.
Tupper lake is worth exploring. Housing is affordable. Whiteface Gore and the Malone Hill are all close enough for game day decisions. You will be isolated... But some people like that.
