What is your skiing history?

i started skiing at age 10. my mom would drop me off at maple ski ridge. went up the rope tow so many times that year I wore out my gloves. No one else skied in my family. ski club got me to bigger mountains and skiing almost every weekend. once friends started driving we were skiing all over vermont and ny. my first pair of skis had safety straps. ski breaks may very well be the best ski innovation ever. i never had a lesson. either has my son, taught him when he was 3, 19 years ago. was late to technology, a bit arrogant. now i don't remember life before my volkl's. love to ski even though i only get 5-10 days in a year. they are all quality days.

nice repin for the ski break! the sport was a bit more dangerous back then.

Where you lived might have made it easier/cheaper we had skiing as a choice at school on local upstate NY hills and an easy drive to Vermont in the’70’s when it was still pretty cheap there

I was 11 and asked my dad if I could ski. No Idea why but he said yes. He got some used equipment from a collegue and I took my first pair of K2 USA Holiday 185s to Campgaw NJ. I was hooked. He would sometimes take the 215 Heads he got to the bunny hill and sometimes just came back to get me when I was done. High school ski club was unchaperoned Thursday nights at Vernon Valley Great Gorge. Bad idea. Then in college I got smart and skied for free a lot. I drove the equipment van for ski club...stuff like that. Just out of college I got involved with a ski reporting service and skied for free for the next 13 years...Then kids, they cost more...probably made up for all the free skiing but they still rip with me today and my wife, who used to rip, stopped right about that time. Damn Bittersweet Day at Gore today, my kids weren't with me...Can't wait for next season.

I was 5 years old and my Dad took me to Prospect Park in Troy NY and my skis were too long and the boots were too big and I side stepped up a sledding hill a half dozen times or so and did very well. After that I got my own skis and we went to Jiminy Peak. Moved to Michigan when I was 14. Skied on season in ski club at Mt Brighton and stopped skiing for 13 years. When my daughter was 5 I took her and 22 years later I have had the ski bug ever since

yes, skis wacked you in your helmetless head as you tumbled down the mountain. Then you had to take your gloves off to remove safety straps each time your skies popped off. good times

Funny they called them safety straps as they were far from safe. We used to play a game with them on the lift. We'd take our skis off and let them dangle while on the lift. The game was to see who could wait the longest before putting your skis back on before getting to the top. It made for some very unique unloading situations.

Yup. Had the little stringy thing snap on a tumble at Song. Ski took off down the slope, didn’t hit anything except the snowdrift on a corner but it took awhile to find it as it was quite aways under. Whoever invented ski brakes should win a prize. Now if they could just invent a golf ball with brakes and/or with the driver assist thing...

Campys lift game reminds me of me and my BIL( Hans n' Franz ) . So we had multiple adventures over the years but being lazy MOFO's and he being a scientist and very "inventive " ? We friggen hated chairs without foot rests and our Atomic skis were heavy bastages !!!! And many of our regional venues had old HALL Lifts with no footrests

So ole FRANZIE got the idea of taking nylon cord with some handles he made and throwing that shit over the safety bar and then getting it over 170 cm long skis and THEN putting our feet on the cord , hell he even had clips to attach it to the bar so we didnt have to hold it ?Told ya we were lazy dipshits .

Well it twernt easy ????trying to throw that cord JUST right so we could get our boots on it , was about a 50/ 50 deal and the freaking chair was rocking like a sumbith at every attempt to get that damn cord JUST SO it went over the skis ........ but we gots lotsa laffs from other skiers ahead and behind us on the lift .

So he used that chit about a half a season then trashed it. Ole Franzie thought he was gonna get a NOBEL Prize for that "invention" Bwaaaaa hahahahah
