West Mountain Conditions

West Mtn is a great, local mountain but it is small ....it is not a "destination" mountain. People don't drive a great distance to ski West Mtn. It's a hard mountain to keep busy and interested in all day. I remember skiing it for 4 hours and that was too much time - there's not enough terrain to keep you interested. Great place for kids ! Kids can ski anything all day as long with their friends. In my uneducated opinion, you might be able to sell that to locals only. They would really need to up the "non-skiing" activities. I wish them luck, that would be great if their vision takes hold but I think it's going to be a tough road to get there.

The plan will take a while to implement. It's like a Master Plan that a western resort has to submit to the U.S. Forest Service. Gets the framework in place so that more detailed planning, design, and at some point construction can happen in the not too distant future.

The goal for West Mountain is to be a 4-season resort. As someone who drives by on the Northway at least once a year, the draw for me to stop has been the outlets in Queensbury for years. During the summer, the activities that West has on the mountain sound like fun to me. There are hiking trails at the top of the ridge, accessed by a chairlift ride. That's not that common.

The Woods at West Mountain, which has a 10-year time frame to complete, looks to create “an alpine village experience” with year-round recreational activities, accommodations for vacationers and expectation to attract “permanent residents who may desire to live in a resort/recreational community, including locals looking to downsize.”

The plan calls for 252 apartment units, 64 condominium units, 56 duplex units, 65 single-family custom homes and an 80-room hotel. Envisioned is a new retail plaza with a new main ski lodge and outdoor seasonal dining and sitting areas adjacent to a man-made water feature.

West has been on the Indy Pass. Since an Indy pass holder only gets 2 days at each location, that means someone driving a bit farther would only go for a weekend. For the families in the northeast who find the Indy multi-resort model fits in their ski plans, West is a good option.

I checked out West with a friend when we were staying in the Berkshires during a Pres. Day week. We skied West in the morning on Pres. Day. Once it got crowded around 11:30, we went into Queensbury and went shopping. Overall, we had a good time. Keep in mind that my home hill in northern VA is even smaller than West. I can have fun with friends skiing there all day. My friend lives in central PA and is an intermediate skier who learned as an adult when she got her kids started on skis.

West reminds me of my home hill Greek Peak.

I just hope they don't get in head over heels debt.

Hoping this works out better than Adirondack Club & Resort.
