Today's Ride

I met this guy riding through the city streets of Poughkeepsie today. I asked him where he is going and he said “Argentina”. He’s from Germany and he started in Toronto. Came across NY on the Empire State Trail. I got him to our local rail trail and rode with him to our place where he’s camping tonight in the garden. Tomorrow he’s on his way to NYC to visit a friend. Doesn’t want to ride his bike all the way to the city because he fears it could be stolen there. Also wants to camp to keep the cost down. The closest place I could think of for camping is in Harriman at Beaverpond Campgrounds. From there he could bike to a train station. Any one have alternative suggestions?

Croton point park- right next to the train station
That‘s great, will check that out. From what I understand Harriman has a bit of a bear problem. I’ve heard enough stories to be concerned about camping there. A car is easy to store food in. He doesn’t have that option. Maybe hang it?

Hang it for sure. Ive seen bears in Harriman. Considering he’s planning to bike and camp across North America I’d say he should be prepared to bear proof his campsites
Bears are less likely in croton and it is an easier train ride too

Hanging it has been proven to be ineffective now, black bears have figured out how to get em. Gotta go with a can. I stash my can 500+ feet away in a spot it can’t easily roll uncontrollably down a hillside.

I have a canister somewhere.

On this biggest trip I ever took (17 days in Pharoah Lake Wilderness) I spent the first day driving the car around the wilderness, to different trail heads. I'd hike a few miles in and hang a nylon bag, with a canister inside it. Then as I made my way around the area on my trip I could resupply and get rid of any garbage. At the end hauled it out, repeating the original loop by car.

Not sure all of that totally made sense, but it was what I came up with. A bit of a PITA but it worked.

I have a bear canister that I use in the ADKs. They are mandatory in the High Peaks. Recently bought an Ursack AllMitey that is used in conjunction with scent proof bags. Haven’t used it yet. They are lighter and pack down smaller.

I watched a Black Bear undo a rope that hung a bird feeder over a pulley in about 30 seconds.

One thing about my trip... I wasn't hanging my canisters at campsites. These were completely random spots in the woods. Find them with my written notes was fun...

No suggestions but what an impressive ride. What's his destination?

There's a guy I watch on YouTube, Ryan Van Duzer, that's a big time bike packer. He rode from Honduras to Boulder. He's ridden the great divide mountain bike trail from the Canadian border to the Mexican border during covid. This summer he rode Sweden from North to South. His first person videography is first rate plus he's goofy and entertaining.
