To Heat, or Not to Heat, That is the Question

Whether ‘tis nobler in the body to suffer the shivers and sweatshirts of a cold home, or to take arms against the chills, and by turning on the heat end them…..

I suppose the answer is different for everyone (geography and all)….but how long do you all hold out on turning on the heat? Trying to wait until the calendar says November here, but with the house currently at 63 it’s getting tough…..

I wouldn't bother at 63 degrees. It wasn't until my house wasn't getting much higher that 58 that I turned on the heat. I will also turn the heat off for a few days, if temps are going to be above 60ish so I can open the windows.

But, I don't like my house to be too warm. My thermostat is set to 58 at night, and then goes up to 62 for when I am home. My cat has fur. He's fine in 58 all day. ;)

I haven’t given in, yet. No way we make it to 58. Eventually I just get tired of feeling cold. If only the sun would stay out! I will say, putting socks on helped just now…..

Use it as an opportunity to acclimate. Where do you set the thermostat during the winter?

I wear shorts well into the fall as part of my acclimatization process! AC and heat are both generally set at 70.

It used to be, “No heat ‘til trick or treat”. My BIL pushed it to “No heat ‘til turkey meat”. This year I’ve already lost the battle to the higher domestic power.

Pellet stove has been on and off now for the past week. When nighttime temps dip in the 30's (past 2 nights) I run it during the night, then turn it off when I get up in the AM.

Hey Camp. How reliable has the pellet stove been? I hear the hoppers and augers hang up frequently.

What’s next, “no hot bliss ‘till X-Mas”? ?

I suspect my DHP will be clamoring to fire the furnace this weekend, so trick or treat it’s likely to be!
