I was able to attend a conference last week related to my line of work. This conference just happened to be in Anchorage. I don’t think the contents of my checked luggage bag was similar to what the other conference participants packed.
This was my first time in Alaska so I wanted to take this opportunity to explore the area and, if possible, get some skiing in. There was still snow in the mountains (some places had more than others) but all ski hills were closed so I had to earn my turns. I was skiing solo so I limited myself to low angle terrain. Please don’t expect the below to be full of yours truly skiing down steep spines or anything.
Within hours of arriving, I found a nice place just outside of town. As a bonus, I was able to boot up right at the rental car. Snow was heavy but it was great to get some turns in.
I tried a different spot on day 2 after my conference responsibilities ended for the day (the sun doesn’t set until 11 pm this time of year after all). However, there was less snow than anticipated and I had trouble finding the right trailhead, so I bailed before I even got out of the car. No worries though, that’s part of exploring.
I didn’t have any windows to sneak out for the rest of the conference, but I scheduled two free days between the conference and my flight home. The area I went to on my first free day involved about an hour of hiking before I started skinning. Overall, I was able to ski ~1000 ft of vertical before the snow ended, with the last half involving linking together patches of snow down a fun little gully full of corn.
My final day for skiing involved going north where there was rumored to be more snow. The rumors were correct and the weather was perfect. After about only an hour of skinning, I felt like I was in another world up there. It was, at the same time, both massive and quiet. Such a surreal feeling. It was also fun skiing. Snow was firm when I arrived, but softened up nicely by the time I transitioned to downhill mode for my first of multiple runs that day.
Wow, it sure felt good to make some turns this late in the season, and be able to do it in such a beautiful place. I just arrived back home yesterday and I am already thinking about how to go back.
