Tales from The Road

That Sloatsburg rest area was a parking horror show. Ramapo, on the other side of the road, was also a parking horror show (do I get brownie points for writing horror instead of sh**?), but one could often spot some cool cars there.

I try my best to stay off the big roads. I'll take secondary roads wherever I can. I'm not in that big of a hurry and the drive is always nicer. Plenty of food at local joints and it's normally top notch with free entertainment.

I feel you. The Northway, and other interstate highways, put a hurt on a lot of mom and pop businesses when it was built.

That having been said, when I go back to NJ to see my kiddo, it's the Northway and the Thruway.

It's cool to explore the back roads up here. Driving out to Star Lake at the end of July to play a gig.

If we're stopping for food on the way to or from the daks or VT one of our "go to's" is Rip Van Winkle Brewing, good eats and service and not too far off the Thruway. Typically adds 45-50 minutes to the trip

Got onto US15 in Harrisburg, PA heading north one summer on the way to Lake Placid. Eventually connected to a short section of US20 south of Syracuse heading towards the Northway. Had a wonderful time.

No extra time this summer because my 20-something daughter had to be back at work on Monday. She's also a North Country School alum. But still avoided driving south on the NY Thruway and NJ turnpike. Learned long ago when she was in elementary school that driving via I-88 to Binghamton and staying on I-81 until Staunton, VA is the least stressful way to get back to Cary, NC from Lake Placid. Learning that route was the bonus for deciding Massanutten (near Harrisonburg, VA) would be our home mountain instead of a NC ski hill. Would rather drive 800 miles while avoiding NJ/NYC and Baltimore/DC traffic than save 50 miles. Timing is essentially the same. We left at 9:45am after a great pancake breakfast at NCS and got home at 11:45pm.
