Ruined Local Hill

You pay your money ya take your chances

Our friend bought a beach house for 1.5
The property next door is now a Airbnb
Parties all summer long
First world problem.
Folks’ll be lucky if’n folks don’t ruin any more of the world, not just a hill and/or a beach.

Imagine spending your life saving & imagining moving somewhere (maybe buying land, building a house, etc.), then the ski area that your dream is based around changes in some wild way.

What spurred this thread was this post about cost:

But I was also thinking of mountains that go under, mountains bought by vail, mountains changed in some other way that alters the whole reason you liked the place. Hell, maybe “climate change destroys all skiing in the east” should be a consideration for some of us.

What are your contingency plans if this happens? The above solution is easy (just suck it up & pay it), but what if the situation becomes unacceptable to you? Pack up & move? Pick a place that has a bunch of different mountains you could switch over to if one mountain gets shitty? Ski more backcountry? Do more snowmobiling & hunting (and less skiing)?

I've thought about this a lot. My thinking:

I'm old and getting older. There is certainly more nordic in my future. Our land, Garnet Hill, if it continues to thrive and the wilderness.

MTB, our land, the Ski Bowl, Brant Lake.

Gore, bought by Vail... ski weekdays? McCauley. Plattekill. The rest of NY. VT.

The thing that would bum me out would be slopeside condos or houses at Gore. That would bum me out even if I only skied Gore on deserted weekdays.

Personally I think the risks for us moving up there are probably more healthcare related. Get something crazy that requires trips to NYC or whatever.

I agree, interesting topic.

I'm surprised any money gets invested into the ski industry with the way these winters have been going. How many years of operation and at what length of a season do you need for that investment to payoff? Anything more then 10 seems foolish IMHO.

Spot on Harv : as u age proximity to good healthcare is a prime concern . Take it from one who knows , you can be in very good physical shape and SOME unexpected health related event WILL occur when you least expect it .

My docs were floored absolutely astonished when i had my heart attack . Had been a workout dude all my life , ate healthy , no smoking in 35 years , strictly a light social drinker nothing daily and physically active , well adjusted family and social life , retired for 13 years and no stress ..go figure !

Then as is tge case as you age nature also takes it toll on knees hips from 6 -7 decades of athletic endeavor with me it was hip and tey botched it the first time so had to have it reconstructed again . Then as is often the case with bypass surgery ten years later A flutter ( ( because when they cut you open it messes up the hearts electric system also ) it takes time for that phenomena and it is manageable but my point is : SHIT Will happen and you need to have access to great healthcare .

Now that said Harv there are absolutely GREAT orthos in Saratoga and decent cardiac guys in Albany if surgery is required.

The idea that one stays active is laudable and that helps BUT it is absolutely no guarantee so take that into consideration when planning .

yep
thats why we are retiring to Cape Cod.. All the Boston Dr's move to the Cape and open up shop..

We are still 7-10 years from retirement. We were considering PA/DE/NY, but at the moment, it looks like we will remain here in NJ. Our family is here and we are lucky to have anytime access to my sister's house in SVT. We mostly ski with my siblings and their spouses and various nephews and nieces. We have discussed the possibility of renting a place out west for a month in order to get in some western skiing and we could do the same thing for a month of warmth in FL.

I do not see us moving out of the northeast.

^^^ Very similar discussions in our house except staying in PA. We have our first grandchild on the way so it will be interesting so see how that plays into it
