Plattekill Conditions

I'm curious, how much gets cleared out every season? Is there any other glade maintenance other than the one or two volunteer days they have every fall? And how well does this work for keeping the main off trail ski lines maintained enough for each season?
The trees work is all volunteer I believe. The mountain staff have their hands full maintaining and widening actual trails and adding more snowmaking pipe every summer. It is not a perfect system but it works

I didn’t take many pics but here are a few

As I remember, one of the areas I helped in several years ago had been done before. But there is so much tree terrain that there is a natural rotation for where people head on a volunteer Work Day. The more people show up, the more areas can be cleaned up. There are enough volunteers who know the mountain well, so it's relatively easy to break up into small groups who can spread out quickly.

Everyone rides up to start with and then works their way down until it's time for lunch. A hot lunch is provided. Then people ride up again for the afternoon work.

I haven't skied Plattekill when tree skiing would make sense since I didn't learn how to be comfortable in tight trees on steepish slopes until relatively recently. So walking the terrain was very interesting.

Also if anyone is actually tracking the one thing I would note as a constructive point is to have each group have a chainsaw as a nice to have.

For the afternoon with Harv and Brownski and a few others there was one or two logs where that would have saved us 45 minutes I think. Two thicker logs that we handsawed through.

One of the groups I worked with in 2021 had two chainsaws to start with. The electric one ran out of battery after an hour or so. ;-)

Looks awesome Harv. There's nothing like a good day of work in the forest, especially when it's related to your favorite pastime.

Another great day for sure. Got a ton of love for nysb, thank you all for that.

I think all told we did a top-to-bottom several lines wide in our group. One of how many groups? Maybe 4?

Love working on the low angle stuff. No doubt more than half of what we hit had been worked in the last few years.

That is a pretty sight.
