I don't know. I'm guessing a coyote dragged it into the trail. I'd guess a carcass isn't too far way.

One time I was skiing in Mohonk Preserve. Just off the groomed trail was a massive red patch. Not the right shade of red to be hydraulic fluid from a groomer.... had to be blood from a large critter.

It also may have been dropped by an eagle or a hawk
