Non-skiing Corona Mountain Conditions Thread

So, I'd like to start something here outside of the Trip Reports section. I'm very curious about mountain experiences in the east besides actual ski reports. Did you reserve ahead? How was parking? How about lodges? How many bathrooms were available? Did you shelter in your car? Then, where did you eat and sleep off the mountain? Were restaurants and bars open? Crowded in any way? Were markets crowded?

I'm concerned about all of this before I do day one. Still not into doing overnights at this point.

I can't be much help. I skied at Whiteface and Gore where I have a pass. I think these passholder days are not reflective of what we will see after they open it up.

My buddy who skis Hunter midweek said lines have been very long because of partially loaded chairs.

I had a few situations where my personal space was invaded when I didn't expect it. Hard to know what to do.

Overnights? I've got our place near Gore. That may or may not be the only option. TBD.

What are you thinking for day trips Benny?

What was Whiteface like ? did you go inside the lodge ? did they reduce the number of places you can "boot up" ?

I booted up in the car, but I think they would let you boot inside. At least that day.

If you want to boot up inside, I'd say go insanely early like me, or ski the afternoon.

The new partially complete mid-lodge is ironically ideal. Completely empty of tables, no food service of any kind that I saw, warm, with working bathrooms.

ETA: I went to Plattekill and Belle on Saturday. Because I overslept, I ended up going the entire day, until about 8pm, without eating. Not ideal but I actually did ok.

Thanks Harv. That news about Hunter is not good. That means Thursday will be an S show, if this storm produces. Damnit. But, I'm not surprised. There's a huge market close to Hunter much like me that can't/won't fly, and even stay overnight in Vermont. Thing is, there's no way of assessing the situation on webcams, because, even if a mountain has them, they're hiding the S show from the base camera. Besides, the Hunter web site is just a sales tool for the Epic pass. I did see Sugarbush from Saturday, and that just totally turned me off. I'm not literally risking my life and health for that. I want the Dolomites, damnit! (Benny falls to floor and has tantrum)

I have the Epic northeast midweek, which is essentially a cheap Hunter day trip for me. Mt Snow, too, but that's not a day trip. I have Ikon, but, it's going to have to be a whole lot better than this for me to use it. I can carry it over to 21/22 if I don't. Maybe I'll do Catamount and Berkshire East out of pocket . Cheap, midweek.

Plattekill is a weekend mountain, no way.

This sucks.

Honestly my feeling is that if Plattekill can't spin safely on a Saturday, then stick a fork in the season.

In terms of lines at Hunter I call out @Scottski63 to tell it first hand. I was repeating what I thought I heard, maybe I overdid it.

Well, I'm thinking Hunter will be much safer and will run smoother when all chairs are up.

And every other hill in the east.

It's early season problems compounded. Very limited terrain, very high interest.

If we could skip to mid-season or April, maybe it would be better.

Been surfing around the net tonight. The skiers I see posting really want to feel safe. IMO it's an opportunity for the mountains.

Thanks as well for the info. I backed out of my northeast midweek epic this year on the premise the Catskills will be very busy due to travel restrictions making the Catskills the first stop from the NYC, NJ, CT area. I've been a Hunter midweek regular for some years now but am sitting this one out. Should be a good year for Plattekill.

In terms of Berkshire East- Are days trips from NY to MA for skiing currently OK per MA travel policies?
