Most of you probably know about this place, located just south of town on the Goodnow Flow Road, but if you are unfamiliar please read on. If you just want conditions, please skip to the end. I love to go to these small northeast ski hills and imagine how it would have been, shooting down such a slope, riding the T-bar back up, all on my long wooden skis--the benefits of growing up in Newcomb or similar locations in the early days of skiing. While my conditions report seems to be mostly misspent nostalgia, hang in there, I promise something worthwhile eventually!

This is the view from the parking lot, daunting, I know.

As is traditional, the upper lift shack has a pretty sweet view, but conditions were a little scratchy in there.

A trail leads from the top into the woods, yes, we even have sidecountry access! Conditions here were a bit more variable than the main hill, but overall the snow is still really good. All those ice storms have created a durable, self-healing snowpack (perhaps 12 inches on the ground).

The top features this Adirondack chalet. The ski tracks I was following turned around here. One intrepid snowmobiler continued right off the other side. There was at least 12 inches on the ground up here Feb. 16, 2023.

And that is it. I think this was my favorite run, skiers left. Like most Adirondack hills, a skier who wants to get here needs to be prepared to get through a drainage and then make their way uphill for a few feet! Note the coverage, really pretty good on what I presume are the lesser skied trails.

@Harvey I guess this whole thing reads more like a TR than a Conditions report, you can move it if you think that best, right Harv? I think in general conditions this year are slightly better than last. I know this is a minority opinion but this year the storms have all been right side up with ice followed by snow while last year featured storm after storm with all the nice powder sealed up under breakable or semi-supportive crust. Newcomb Ski Hill is a great way to assess local conditions in the south-central Adirondacks without really having to leave your car.

Love it I want to ski there.

Can you give me the date you skied?

I would also like to add a listing in the directory. Could you help with that?

There is also a small ski hill in Indian Lake, anyone have any idea if that is operational this year?

@Harvey Most of the information I had was from this link:

http://www.offonadventure.com/2015/03/xc-ski-upper-hudson-ski-loop-trail.html

He has a number of pictures and a discussion of the Newcomb Lake ski hill at the end of his post. It is interesting to compare the snow level in his photos (end of March 2015) with mine. Maybe it is a bad year...

TLDR: Town Ski Hill rant.
I have to admit there seem to be more of these little town hills than I had expected, the question always is, are they operational? I had thought that Pisco Lake (Inlet?) featured some type of rope tow, but I can't find the reference now, and maybe I had it mixed up with Indian Lake. Dynamite Hill, in Chestertown definitely seems to have opened this year

It may be the smallest of the lot--NELSAP gives its height as 65 feet

From the old thread in the old forum

I found the Schroon Lake Ski Tow

which has evidently been operational fairly recently but perhaps not in the last few years? Of course Pisgah and Mccauley (the Everest of town ski hills--now that Big Tupper is dead) are larger versions of the town rope tow or t-bar. Beartown has to go in here as well, up in West Chazy (near Brownski's old stomping grounds?). While not run by a town or village, it is a non-profit run largely by volunteers. Many of these places also offer ski lessons, a race program, sledding, cross country sking, and even tubing at the larger hills. Like I said in op, being a kid in one of these communities, with access to all this, must be 100% better than sitting at home staring at a screen!

One last thing, since this started as a conditions report, the High Peaks looked pretty white and shiny in the distance, and Ermine Brook slide looked in (from the road!).

And finally, back to the Newcomb Lake ski hill (this is a post about the Newcomb Lake ski hill--I think). The Newcomb Chapter of NYSB should brush out from the summit to the top of the lift line. Brush and low angle (not to mention low snow this year) make it difficult to negotiate some segments of the trail to the summit. But by and large, I think I recommend the Newcomb Ski Hill. Sorry this is so long. If you made it this far, thanks for reading.
