His car was discovered in the town, approximately 30 miles from Palmerton, yesterday. Matthew entered the Palmerton, Pennsylvania police station around 4 p.m. today, December 13, seeking to make a phone call. An officer from the Palmerton department reported that Matthew indicated the possibility of a missing-person report for him and mentioned that people might be looking for him.
Earlier on Tuesday, his vehicle was found about an hour away in the Delaware Water Gap in Pennsylvania, parked in a lot frequently used by hikers on the Appalachian Trail. Matthew had been hiking the trail and had even logged his visit in the trail's visitor log. The car had been at the location for several weeks until someone alerted the police, who then ran the license plate. Matthew's family was notified and traveled to Pennsylvania, only for Matthew to appear in Palmerton.
According to the police, Matthew mentioned having a negative encounter with some individuals on the trail, which may have influenced his decision to terminate the hike. Matthew's mother arrived at the police station and picked him up. This evening, they were scheduled to meet with U.S. Park Service Police at the Delaware Water Gap.
