Hardpack ScrapeOff: Platty vs Belle, Hunter.

Everyone wants to ski pow all the time, but here on the East Coast you gotta learn to enjoy the speed and the carve of hardpack as well. Too many people don't have the right skis, and don't get them tuned enough. If you're skiing a 90+ waist noodle you're gonna have a bad time.

All that being said I don't enjoy it when it's a true sheet of ice either.
I don't have the right skis and I don't get them tuned enough.

I have 19 days this year, all were fun, most were soft.

I have about the same, most were hardpack except a few days in December and a spring day at Belle

Is it the wide skis or is it a tele thing? Few weekends ago when Gore was hard and fast. I noticed , I did not see one Tele skier out skiing?

For what it's worth, I've skied one Saturday in early season at Hunter and one Friday at Plattekill while driving to Lake Placid from/to NC. On a weekend, if I were in the area during ski season again, I would go back to Plattekill without hesitation. Even if I was coming from a direction that meant Plattekill was going to take a bit longer to reach. Meaning independent of snow conditions.

Here’s some food for thought....

I have a pretty ok ski Hill in my back yard here with awesome ski touring once you leave the area. I’m 5 hours from Durango or Telluride. I’m not too far from Santa Fe and Taos as well. Basically, I’m close to some world class skiing but I’m still itching to do a trip back east to hopefully hit a couple good days at Plattekill. I don’t think anyone would say the same about the other Catskills ski areas.

it’s a beautiful little mountain and captures the soul of what skiing should be imho. It’s an anti-resort and a breath of fresh air in today’s world of mega passes and corporate conglomerate skiing.

its literally why I joined this forum, well that and to mess with the guy that wanted fences along every ski run. What a weirdo.
