I try to get at least one ski trip in with my daughter each season, sometimes we stay in Michigan and ski at multiple different ski areas over a span of 4 or 5 days. Last year we did a two day trip to Holiday Valley and we all set to do the same thing when my cousin from the Albany area asked when we were goin to ski by her and come and visit. So I looked up ticket prices for Gore just before Christmas and couldn't believe I saw a two day ticket for $130.00. So needless to say we changed plans.
We pulled into Gore at 8:30 unloaded the car and still got a spot in the upper lot which I hoped for a not very busy mountain. Gore is one of those places that doesn't look all that impressive from the base.
We were booted up an on the gondola by 9:10 and when we got out and looked around I almost felt overwhelmed as where to go, even though this was around my 6th time here dating back to 1977.
We went down Ruby Run as we were looking for a shorter run to get our legs warmed up a little before skiing a longer run. From there we headed over to the High Peaks chair, which the last time I was there was still the old double. I have to admit the new lift is a nice comfortable chair I do miss the old school feel to the double. I am glad they didn't put a high speed lift in.
They were blowing snow on Cloud and I very happy to see the snow was not sticking to my jacket on the lift in hopes the snow would not be sticky and I am happy to say it was a nice soft manmade snow. We made a handful of runs off of the Straight Brook lift and went into the new to me Saddle Lodge for some water and a snack and i am happy to see it still has that great view.
We made our way over to the Burnt Ridge area and I was very pleased with Backwoods , but i can see where the interconnect trails which are narrow could be an issue when they are busy. Echo had the worst conditions of the day, lots of chunks of hard snow or ice and icy spots from where the racers were making their turns.
We made runs down Twister and Showcase, Twister is one of my favorite runs on a non busy day, I like to ski cruisers with some speed and twister fits that bill for me. This was also my first time on the AEII lift, again I miss the AEI for the old school part such as all the drive shafts that used to move the chairs though the base terminal.
In the end It was great to back at Gore ,We got 18 runs in and my legs felt like they do when I ski 50 runs in Michigan. Lift lines were maybe one or two people if that, most of the time we skied right on the lifts.
The plan was to ski on Friday also, but the cold and more so the wind we decided that the risk of frostbite just wasn't worth it, but we had figured it was a good possibly that we wouldn't be skiing on Friday so we left nothing on the table when we skied on Thursday. Overall it was another successful ski trip and seeing family that I don't see that often helped a lot.
The last thing I saw and never would have thought I would see at Gore was the Oscar Meyer wiener mobile.
