Gore Mountain Conditions

Good Day but man it was cold, even without sustained wind, just frigid. Ridge/Chate were good early, skied off and a tad icy after noon, headwaters looks just about ready as well. Best snow of the day was on the north side!

Looks like they are getting ready to open High Peaks, though it would be with just Wood In. I think I found the reason for the disappointing snowmaking on the summit. There is a large leak near The Saddle. You can see it spilling out onto Powder Pass. Any water that leaks out (and it is a lot) can't go to the guns.

Dang. Why can’t we have nice things?
Hopefully the worker bees get it under control soon before it gets worse.

My ski buddy ain’t gonna wanna hear that.
Though there is a big culvert hopefully it flows into.

He’d lap the pass while I cruised the others.
We both smiled a lot.

Last year there was a problem that prevented snowmaking on Open Pit. This year a leak limits upper mountain snowmaking. ORDA lost a World Cup event because of a poorly maintained observation deck too. Maybe it’s deferred maintenance.

Maybe a consultant to develop a maintenance program isn’t a bad idea.

Run count for today was:

6 Hudson
6 Burnt Ridge
6 Topridge
3 Straightbrook
3 North
3 Adirondack Express
2 Gondola
1 High Peaks

30 lifts for 33543 vertical.

Definitely was one of those days when the parking lots and base area looked very crowded, but most of the mountain was not. The terrain off of the ski bowl and Topridge stood out the most. There were also some glades open on the Ski Bowl (JJ's), and Burnt Ridge (Barkeater, Abenaki, and Tahawus), which I made sure to ski. The only thing I found disappointing was the poor conditions and lack of snowmaking on the summit. I hope whatever issue there is can be fixed quicky.

How’s an outside outta state consulting firm gonna do it?

Subcontract it out to “experts"?

In the mean time normal wear and tear continues.
How is Ashley the Luger gonna deal with "normal wear and tear?" ORDA needs an organized program to maintain its facilities. If they don't have currently have the "expertise" they need, they need to hire "experts." A consultant is not the best solution, but they have lost a World Cup event, and skiing at Gore has been compromised last year and maybe this year because of neglected facilities, so here we are.

The ORDA board may think $3 million is too much for that, but what is their alternative? A facilities manager capable of organizing a program is gonna need a salary near $500K, and probably another 6 or more assistants even if the existing ORDA work force is trainable. Maybe they could hire @snoloco's firm for the job. Sno seems to know more about ORDA operations than anyone.
