I'm a map collector. Google Earth is one of my favorite software inventions so far this century. I can kill hours playing with the 3D, and light animation feature

This is an image my new homestead (blue square). I won't be able to see any of these mountains from my house, but I can climb the hill on the North side of my property and get a decent view of the Enchantments.

Here's another one from a walk I took a few weeks ago... this is a fantastic ski spot. The viewable route is pretty straight forward. Getting to the trailhead requires a sled. The road to the trailhead is closed at mile 1 during the winter.... it's about 15 miles from there until you start the ascent. Peaks in this zone are around 7k. The snowpack over here gets pretty fat... it's only about 20 miles from Stevens Pass as the crow flies. Glacier Peak is the prominent figure in the top-center-right

That’s pretty cool. I just went to take a look at our favorite Catskills resort on there. I forgot how much more detailed google earth is compared to the navigation oriented map apps.

I love maps to the point where I cannot recycle a paper topo that I've had for 40+ years. of a place I've never been and will never go to. Google Earth was a game-changer and tracking devices like the SPOT and InReach allow people to share their experince like never before (as long as they aren't giving away the secret stash). Sometime I look up customer's addresses just to see where they live, that can tell you a lot about a person. What a world.

Care to share?
In the process of packing up my house as we speak. Moving into a rental in my neighborhood while we build a new house outside of Cashmere (down in the valley). I'll still be up by the ski area for 1 more season. We have been planning the move for a while, so it feels good to finally execute the plan. I moved here 10 years ago thinking that I needed to be as close to the ski area as possible (currently about 10 minutes). After having the experience, I have gained some wisdom.... snow removal on a Powder Day is a pain in the ass, and it doesn't matter how long you have to drive... there's always going to be a line-up on chair 1.

Our new location is about the mid-point between Stevens and Mission. 35 Minutes to Mission. 45 minutes to Stevens.

I'd really appreciate you sharing what you learn, as we are a few years from our project now. Just contracted a designer for house plans. Maybe a separate thread.

I guess we are making the elevation mistake. We could actually be closer to the ski area in the valley, but we (I really) want to live on the land we've come to love.

We finished the build 2.5 years ago. PM me if you want.

Really just looking to avoid obvious mistakes.

I wrote this in 2009:

But obviously there is a lot missing from it.
