Games of Some Olympiad

I would support a reasonable cost state-wide winter Olympics bid for NY, as long as costs were managed along the lines of how NY did the 1980 winter games. Us old timers will recall how much NY was criticized for running a low budget event. Maybe the last low budget and successful Olympics. One where we bussed people around using city busses from Buffalo to NY. Where we trucked snow in, just in case. Where there were traffic jams because the state didn't want to spend billions on unaffordable environmentally damaging roads. The Olympic Village were designed from the start to be secure (8 short years after the deaths and hostage takings at Munich). When the Olympics were done the Village was turned into a prison and man, was that criticized! Hardly anyone would be skiing Whiteface and Gore today if not for the 1980 Olympics.

I'd especially support this if the events and money were spread around to privately owned winter resorts too. They could use the investment, and the state could use the enhanced reputation for improving and supporting long term tourism business.

In the short term it would be expensive, but the basic infrastructure is already here.

The dreamer in me wonders if a new Olympics could use Big Tupper, maybe for the snowboard type events. Pretty close to LP, could use an infusion of cash. Though more realistically they'd probably rope Gore in, cheaper that way.

Don’t know if this is the place to post this but since there isn’t a WUG thread yet.

The USA’s men team won their 1st hockey game 18 to zip vs Great Britain at Clarkson’s arena.

Link to all winter WUG23 results.
USA women’s hockey got beat by Japan 3-1 at Maxcy Hall in Potsdam.
Used to skate, play hoops, swim, run, lift weights and hit golf balls in that place in the winter.
There was also some ruffed grouse behind it.

Fun watching Gore on ESPN+!

What about the idea that was floated maybe 10 years ago about Montreal/LP hosting games? A lot closer than NYC…

Put a 1/2 pipe at Belle somewhere and ya’d have it all covered in NYS, except for maybe ski-mo at The Big Tupper or some other ADK place.

New York State should be proud of the oldest winter game in North America, played by folks around here.
