Harv for some reason I'm being asked to Log In all the time past several days ,even tho I checked " stay logged in " thought u should know

I dont think having a multi-year thread is a good thing (such as the 500 page F Vail thread).
The amount of money that this website would make through Adsense would go up if threads like that got locked. Over time, I think it would go way up. SEO-width is important and if there are more threads for all of the little sub-topics that people like to discuss, the website will show up for many many more Google queries.
It's also very annoying that I can't glance at this forum and see what people are talking about when the page loads. If it's just the same thread always getting bumped up, I would need to click again and then read a page or two to see what everyone is talking about now. I usually just move onto the next tab.

I hadn't heard this term before. Or maybe it refers to what I call "duplicate content." I've always assumed that a single topic on a narrow subject has more SEO potential then multiple threads. I guess that would be "SEO-depth." (?)
Revenue from Adsense hasn't ever been a goal, if it was, the ads would be much more intrusive. Two things I know would drive more revenue would be replacing the radar with a 300x250 (ad) and putting a 728x90 (ad) where the NYSkiBlog logo is at the top of the page.
Still I'm all in favor of producing more ad revenue if it doesn't ruin (my perception of) the experience. And I am interested in understanding this idea.
The other comment about seeing what people are talking about I don't completely understand. Does this page help:

I subscribe to everything, but I can see how that would be a lot of email (in season) from someone who is only mildly interested. What forums have a good setup for this?
FWIW much of the ad revenue is generated by the directory, so maybe you have a point.

Here's how I took the comment . . .
Supposed a "mega-thread" is noticed by someone who doesn't stop by to read threads that often. Meaning about once a month, instead of once a week. Imagine that 5 pages of posts have been posted in the past two weeks. Just reading the last 2-3 posts probably won't be that interesting.
I've run into that sort of situation when reading the Aussie ski forum. That forum has been around since 1995 and on Xenforo for quite a while. There are plenty of threads that are relatively short term as well as mega-threads that have been around for more than a decade. For resort conditions, moderators or long-time members start a new thread every season.
My understanding is that if someone hasn't looked at a long thread for a while, the systems no longer knows what the post was read last by the user.

To clarify, one thing that I meant was that if you want to know what people are discussing in a megathread, you have to go to the end first, then go backwards to find the comments everyone is responding to. You can't just read a thread title and see what the conversation is about once there are 500+ pages.
Regarding the stats I see posted above, I would expect a few threads to show up in that top 10 list. I suppose that the lack of those in the top 10 is also a bit of a symptom of this kind of megathread mantra.
I would better describe seo width as the # of keywords that you are able to rank for.... rather than ranking #1 for something big, you can rank for 1,000 different smaller subjects and get more traffic. Cast a wide net.
Here is some casual advice about ad stuff you brought up.
If you want to tweek ads in the fall, I would tweak the one at the bottom first because that won't be a big deal. Use their giant horizontal ad down there. I forget the size but its about 2x as big as the 768px one and it definitely makes more money. Maybe consider using that big one at the top too, but I would not use 2 at the top or replace the logo.
I would not replace any of the radar stuff. I think people like that, Google knows people like that, stats seem to show people like that, you can trust that you are being rewarded for that in ways that are direct and indirect and I would leave it all there for sure.
The new posts page might be helpful here but I think I prefer the main forum page most of the time. I load this site from a bookmark folder that includes lots of other forums, so they all open at the same time and they all sort of go to the same generic place in the hierarchy. In a higher volume forum, the new posts page just wouldnt work to get an overview... you would want a new threads page maybe, but Id still probably prefer the main page.
"What websites have a good setup for this"? You are asking about the email subscriptions you mention? Not sure, I usually unsubscribe to everything if I have the chance. I know all of the Vbulletin forums do a good job with offfering options but I dont think you need to change anything about email subscriptions. Maybe I am misunderstanding what you are asking here.

Missed this . . . I don't want any email from online ski forums for active threads. Doesn't matter if the average number of threads with new posts per day is 4 or 40 or 140. Email for PMs is okay.

Every once in a while, I log out of another forum that is more active and that covers more topics than NYSkiBlog. Then I get a sense of what lurkers see who either don't set up an account, or don't bother to log in if only reading. For that type of lurker, a megathread is less likely to be read than a thread created in the last few weeks or months.
