Forum Feedback Thread

Thanks Joneski. This software is way more capable than nabble.

Also should be more useful on mobile devices. Curious to get feedback on that aspect.

One thing I am not so sure about is "trophies." They seem kind of lame, and I'm still not sure where they are.
None of the forums I'm active on that use Xenforo worry about the Trophy points. I think they can be used to automatically change the category under a Username. So would change from "New member" to something else after a certain number of posts.

Does the forum software provider have some sort of list of features, i.e. what this does compared to Nabble?
Having been using Xenforo for a couple of other ski forums for years, the list to compare to Nabble would be pretty long. But most would be features that are more behind the scenes than what makes a difference to a regular user.

The biggest advantage is the handling of picture files and links to videos.

The only weakness I've come across is the built-in Search function. I often do better with a directed Google search with the start of a forum URL after ":" as in "alta high T: forumURL"

The ability to have a list of Watched threads can be handy. When you post in a thread, that automatically puts it on your list. But can also click on Watch Thread without posting.

From what I can tell this should be a much better user experience for members. I'm certainly hoping that is true.

Another feature that I use often is selecting only a part of a post to be quote in a Reply. Especially useful when commenting on a long post for whatever reason. Or not repeating a bunch of photos from a trip report.

I've been on forums using over six different types of software. There is a reason that the two I've been with the longest eventually switched to Xenforo. Both had used 1-2 others before. One is run by someone who isn't very technical and the other has a co-founder and Admin who is very knowledgeable in IT at a professional level. I think you've made a good choice.

It's well worth going to your Preferences to set up Alerts and email options. I like Alerts, but don't want automatic email notifications for Watched threads.

I like the mobile version of this (on Android 9, Firefox). I don't imagine the old content will be moved over as that's a hell of a job, but I do think that the power users here had a real knack for reviving relevant, dormant threads rather than just posting something new. However, maybe it was the adept and responsive moderator. :p

Not sure about a list of features for members.

Moving content is unfortunately manual, because Nabble isn't compatible with any known migration software.

James and I moved some of our own favorite TRs, and a few of those of some others, but only for people who signed up again.

The thing about TRs is that is makes some sense just to move the original post. Other threads aren't really like that.

Unable to change avatar. Otherwise, I like the new layout.
