I believe Albany is the most northern part of their range. They are up there in a pine barren or on an escarpment or something. I’ll have to look it up.

Hey @jasonwx the cacti are also in Massachusetts. There are two species known to be in New York and New England, Opuntia humifusa and Opuntia cespitosa. Both are considered endangered. What you see there on Hook Mountain is O. humifusa, entirely yellow with small needles. In Mass. there is O. cespitosa, its flower has an orange center and the needles are longer. There is a fairly large population on Nantucket with over 1,000 plants in three locations. There is also a small patch of only one square meter somewhere in Barnstable County on the Cape. Would be a cool find. If you like Pina Coladas…

That’s pretty interesting. I’ve seen Jason’s patch while hiking that ridge and thought it was curious but it didn’t occur to me haw special it was. That area isn’t all that high in the grand scheme of things but a lot of the vegetation has a sort of alpine look to it- smaller stunted trees and such.

White Baneberry AKA Doll’s Eyes / Actaea pachypoda and Sweet Joe Pye Weed / Eutrochium purpureum join the late summer party along the upper Clove Creek in Fahnestock State Park.
