I looked out behind my house and noticed that the Beech tree looked horrible. Well it looks like it’s the damn nematodes! Started in Ohio and have moved West.

I have a few Beechs on my property and love the fall foliage.
First the Ash trees now the Beech.

I don’t know much about it. I think they are still trying to understand what’s going on and what the long term impacts will be. We have a huge hedge of American Beech in front of our place that is very old. It would be a shame to see them go. I know Bartlett Tree Service has been heavily researching it and have developed a treatment program for trials. Treatment might be effective with ornamentals but unfortunately, it isn’t realistic with the ones out in the forest. Cankers and Birch Bark Disease already have them stressed. In our area they were hit with two years of Gypsy moths and drought last summer. Adding Birch Leaf Disease will definitely take its toll.

I always wear safety glasses when working around them. The dead stems are brittle but have a lot of strength if you come straight down on the tips. I was working with a woman once who got one right up the nose. We went through a whole roll of paper towels trying to stop that mess.
