COVID nor'easter

You start to see signs of these babies 7-10 days out. You look at your work calendar and start to text a few buddies to see who can play. I warn people at work that a big one is on the way. Usually my batting average is under 200. As more information pours in plans start to form. Excitement builds, gear gets assembled and I am obnoxiously giddy. Flags go up, plans get finalized, game on.

With COVID rules in place I am not quite as stoked as usual. New rules bring the unknown. Limited options, long lift lines or no access at all. Entire states are off limits.

Like everything else this year this experience will just be different.

Thoughts?

The current COVID situation will make it easier for me to take a midweek powder day, although Magic won’t likely be one of the destinations this year. I do worry more about crowding/lift lines, as more skiers show up to NY hills for such days. I bet Hunter is going to be pretty crowded on Friday, I really don’t wanna deal with that. I bet Belle is crowded as well. I wish there was someplace small where I could earn some turns on Friday, that would be....;)

It depends on how strict mountains are about adhering to their capacity limits. I was at Hunter this past Sunday and they were turning people away because it was fully booked. Lines were no longer than 5 minutes. This weekend is the true test. Increased terrain, yahoos coming out of the woodwork because it snowed, and some terrain will simply not be ready despite the snow. I don't envy the customer-facing people at any mountain this weekend. I am just happy I reserved this weekend back in November.

in the past i have had good luck with the weekend before Christmas. crowds were low due to last minute shopping. malls are dead, hiking trails are packed, so this maybe a shit show. time will tell

A guy we do business with was talking about driving up to Stratton [from NJ] if the storm really delivers. He'd stay in an AirBnB. Under this scenario, no way he would meet VT's quarantine requirements. Personally, I don't want to go down that road.

Sunday is going to have to be the day for us. Question is -- where? Hunter? (I've never been.) Platty? Belle? Doesn't seem like a day trip up to Gore is worth it. Question how much snow they will get and what will be open.

Magic is not going to get it. Platt you have to know someone to get up. My pass gets me windam.

Where’s the best place to ski for this one? Magic? Plattekill? Berkshire East?

if you did a quick day trip to magic and kept to yourself would that really matter? I don’t think so.
i'm with you. i respect everyone's approach to covid. i would never preach to you. but through this entire pandemic i have felt safe outside. hiking, golfing, drinking around the fire, whatever. outside to me is the safe zone. i don't get the big deal of me going to vermont, skiing for 5 hours and leaving. i can do that without ever entering a building.

I'm thinking about a trip to Sunday River in Maine, or possibly NH in the near future. Covid restrictions are much looser in those states, and as mentioned before, no real need to enter a building. It's gonna suck not being able to to go inside for lunch, but I'm willing to improvise. I'll be very happy as long as I'm on the snow this season.
