Bristol Conditions

With the overnight drop in temps, things firmed up nicely for our beer league racing. The rest of the mountain was somewhat marbly as you might expect after grooming following a thaw and freeze cycle-not bad though.Lower Northstar was great and no problem getting back to the Comet lift. Overcast and damp-quit a little after noon feeling quite chilly. Only crowds were my old guy buddies waiting for first chair..............just don't understand the logic if there's no fresh snow!:)

Better today than yesterday-an inch or two of natural and another grooming smoothed things out. Flat light mostly-the sun peeked out a few times, but not consistently. Ran the mini bumps to skier's right on Galaxy-sort of crusty but the fresh snow made them OK-a change from the groomed slopes. We'll see what the upcoming weather event brings-could be snow, ice, rain or sleet. Taking tomorrow off unless we get a big dump! No crowds!

Saturday February 8- day 1 at Bristol for me this season. We arrived around 815 and knew we had to get on the mountain quickly as 5 school buses and a tour bus were arriving.

Was on the chair shortly after 830am. Headed straight over to Galaxy and Northstar. Polaris-Northstar top to bottom was absolutely spectacular. Galaxy was pretty good but nothing like Northstar. Universe was also quite nice, it was groomed top to bottom. However there was an ugly swale at the bottom of Universe that claimed a couple of victims early on and were carted off by ski patrol.

Galaxy and upper meteor also quite nice. Meteor a bit more marble snow but still decent and ripping fast.

After some hot laps we headed to the Bristol's "premiere run" Rocket. Unfortunately Rocket was an absolute POS trash. Variable all hardpack and ice, absolutely dreadfully bad. They really need to drop the auger and groom aggressively.

After the miserable run on Rocket we headed back to Northstar and just kept lapping.

Finished with a final run on Southern Cross which was also pretty good.

Overall the crowds were decent but nothing crazy and lines were quick. A few of the typical meat missiles but my group was ripping fast so with a little timing we stayed ahead of the fray.

14 runs and almost 15k vert and we called it a day.

Hit the bar for an Apres beer and then headed to Other Half brewery for a flight.

Today felt like a good classic, western NY winter ski day-- something we've missed the last few years.

Three day report:
Sunday.Skied with my wife. Enough of a crowd that we split up and took the singles line a few times, and the Rocket Triple once.Almost no lines at the Galaxy chair. Conditions were decent with some icy spots-my wife didn't like Lower Universe. Comet surprising had the best snow of the front trails. Met up with our daughter, middle granddaughter, and 7 year old almost never ever grandson. Granddaughter took off with a friend and we spent time with the grandson on the magic carpet. He did OK, but it's time for a lesson with someone who knows how to teach little kids! Left around 2:00 and the crowds were still there-no hurry to watch the Super Bowl without the Bills in it.

Monday. Met up with my occasional skier brother and a hockey buddy of his.Had fun showing his friend around Bristol and pushing him a little. Fortunately, not crowded so he had plenty of room to maneuver on the steeper slopes. He loved Southern Cross/aka The Junior Downhill. Condtions were decent.

Tuesday. Beer League race day. Mostly sunny with great visibility and fantastic grooming. Did warmups on the Loop and Galaxy before course inspection at 9:20 or so. Great course conditions-had my fastest ever time on that particular slope (Outer Orbit), obviously a lot depends on the set, but still fantastic race surface! Finished and went back out and skied until about 2:00. Stared to get a few scraped spots, but still very good.

Nice to have a real winter for a change!

Decent conditions again today with the Galaxy chair running. The Universe moguls are groomed which left the trail with some marbles. All else good-some icy spots but not bad. Did a couple runs off the Crawler-Milky Way and Nova had nice edgeable snow and no wind on the chair. I like to go back there and work on turns and it's perfect for that. Hate to say it, but I'm starting to get the boredom factor happening. Running up and down groomers is fun, but I'm ready for a change. Hard to tell what is happening at Bristol from the webcam, but it's really coming down in Rochester. Was planning on taking tomorrow off, but all plans can change!

FYI-For those who may be thinking about coming over the weekend, the Cleveland Metro ski club will be racing Saturday and Sunday. Comet will be closed for most of the day and the bar will be packed! Those folks like to drink!

How's Rocket? Saturday it was awful with all rock hard pack and ice.

Thanks for the warning about the Cleveland racers. I'll get mentally prepared😁

Not bad. Plenty of snow on it, but still gotta look for icy spots, although from the webcam it looks like they're getting snow, so that should help.

Against my better judgement, I decided to race, at least the top to bottom. NY Masters is combining with them so we get an opportunity to race at Bristol other than beer league. Not sure if I'll do the later races-it's quite a delay.

Cleveland Metro and over 10” of snow forecasted. What could go wrong?

I registered, but haven't paid, so if it looks bad I'll skip the race. Don't want to spend the morning slipping fresh snow off the course..............:)

Was hoping to ski this weekend but I'm just not sure due to the Thursday melt followed by refreeze. Saturday could be boilerplate--- but it could also be groomed goodness, especially early when I would go. I think I'm out for Sunday due to the snow on Saturday night which could make Sunday an overcrowded "piles day."

Will be interested in a Friday report if anyone goes.
Thank you
